For future students, 700-1400 should do you for!

Do you generally write on all three passages?
Generally, yes. But I don't address everything in the passages, just the bits I find important/link with the other passages.
I reckon I'd run out of time! My 1,000 words usually take the whole hour! :S

Are you sure approximating 850 word essay is only 17 - 18? I'd be assuming it'd be a solid 18, and those two above were either 19.5 or solid 20.... Unless I"m marking these Lit essays wrongly.

*scratches head, maybe I"m marking too lightly*

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

Usually I'd say quality over quantity, but in lit it's difficult to have quality without quantity, I think.

Then again, my friend wrote a 600-700 word essay which got a 17/18 from my lit teacher (who I'd trust with my entire VCE), so I guess quality can always trump quantity if it's good enough.

I've experienced the same thing.

Our class, we were given essays of past student who wrote 2 - 3 pages of hamlet/ some poem analysis, and got 9/10s from our teacher. And shes a pretty tight ass marker. So I was a bit dumb founded with the low marks given just them to the ones published on the VCAA. Those Very High would've been the top 0.5 - 1%. No one knows, we need some re assurance ):.

PS: My post isn't actually going anywhere haha.

I wrote around 1300-1400 words on the exam, if that's any indication.  That said, if your 1000 words were absolutely brilliant, you'd be fine.

My teacher just marked my 1,000 words a 19/20 if that helps.
And, like I mentioned before, a friend got an 18 with 650-700 words.

Not this specific one, but I have done essays at the same level of length/quality in an hour.
Mind you, it's always exactly on the hour. I'm really cutting it quite close.
