I don't want to be the awkward guy who turns up first session without having signed up...

A lot of clubs advertise their events, so that people can go to them and sign up afterwards if they actually like the club (have been invited by The Shakespeare Company, Monash Uni Role-Players and Board Game Society). So, you wouldn't be the "awkward guy".

But yes - there is clubs day. Meet them there, and they can sign you up. There's also the e-mail option, but they'll probably ask you to go to an event and sign up there.

Yeah one of them is recorded apparently but my mum went into a fit talking about wasting uni fees and bad arrangements blah blah blah.

There's not much that can be done, really - the uni offers so many units, you can't expect none of them to clash. Even really similar ones - hell, I've had lectures of CO-REQUISITES clashing before.

There aren't any free ones any more if that is what you are asking, Monash has gone sustainable ;)

I got one today in the little library next to wholefoods when picking up my msa sticker, they also had boxes of tea. You have to pre-register your details on the msa portal online but then you can just rock up and dodge the queue at the msa desk.

Does anyone have the faculty of medicine orientation thing tomorrow ?
If I can be bothered waking up early I'll be coming along to have a little dance with the other host year peeps (Note: I'm a terrible dancer, so you should get a good laugh out of it). See below to try and spot me:

I'll be around uni tomorrow involved in both the Science peer mentoring and host year programs so if any of you see a guy wearing either of these...

(Image removed from quote.)

...who looks like this (have a cheeky fb stalk, I don't mind), feel free to say hi!

Are there any official activities/events after Orientation (I heard somewhere about Clubs Week?) that we can join clubs? I don't want to be the awkward guy who turns up first session without having signed up...

Cheers!
Next Wednesday all the stalls that have been running through o-week will be up and about one last time. This is mainly so that those who missed out in o-week have the opportunity to sign up to all the clubs until their heart's content (Y)

who do I speak to if for one of my units (ATS1873), I didn't get any of my preferences for tutorial time and the only time available to pick (Friday at 4pm) I can't do for religious/family reasons? Like is there a timetabling officer or? Thanks :)

The lecturer/unit coordinator for one of my units is only running one tute, and I can swap into it if I want. Should I?

Because on the one hand, the discussion should connect perfectly with the lectures, feedback on assessment will be extra helpful come exam time and all the insight for the exam will be accurate. But on the other hand, I get this feeling like minor slip ups in essays will be marked extra harshly, because he's been running the subject for so long.

Is this tutorial auto-allocated? If not, keep refreshing Allocate+ and hope that a different tute time opens up. If so, get in contact with the unit coordinator and see if they can help manually allocate you to any different timeslot.

I don't really think there's any harm in switching to his tute; often your work is marked according to a set of criteria on a rubric and all tutors have been instructed as to what sort of things to look out for. Sure, the lecturer might be a bit more critical than other tutors, but it's possible that he may be the one who's marking your exam (assuming this unit has one), which is helpful considering you'll be more familiar of what he wants in a written assessment.

Basically this. And it's possible that if he knows the content better or at a deeper level than the other tutors (by virtue of having taught it for so long), he will give better feedback.

That's the problem with the education system at the moment, really; we're so worried about grades and the like that the whole point of studying - to learn more and to improve ourselves - has been misplaced.

Best of luck. :) (I'm sure any of the tutors would be fine. For what it's worth, I have a similar conundrum in one of my units, so you're not alone!)

Hi,

Is there any way to change your name on the official student records at Monash?

I want to change my Chinese name to my preferred English name (which I am known as). I checked ask.monash, they said I needed supporting legal documents but all my legal documents have my name in my Chinese name....

Any solutions?
Thanks!

Idk, I'd personally take the non-lecturer tute. There's always two sides to every coin, having a different perspective on things could be beneficial (I know that it was very useful in probability having someone different to the lecturer to listen to, and I loved Kais).

Is it a common practice to not get textbooks until 2 weeks into classes? If so, how do I access set reading materials?

Super common practice.
In fact, most people wait a week or two into classes before deciding if they'll get them, and then get them in like week 6.

The library should have an overnight or non-borrowable copies of the reading materials you can use.
