http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2014handbooks/units/MTH1010.html

I can't find anything on attendances. If I can only miss three that would be terrible.

three is >/=25% of the semester's lessons, it's a fair bit of class, asking for 75% attendance isn't such a hard ask. sometimes the labs/tutes/whatever may not be marked, but attendance may be a hurdle to pass the unit or you may lose like 20% of your mark. I don't know anything about mth1010 specifically though, but you should have been advised in week 1 the requirements to pass the unit.

Haha don't get me wrong I love the course thus far but I'd like two have computer science as it relates more with the science degree ya feel.

Anyway how do I get this going?

if you want to do global studies and science, while still doing something computer related. have you considered this? http://www.monash.edu/science/future/study/computational-science

I'm not sure how to transfer though unfortunately. It may be an option at this point to drop out of first semester and reapply as a new applicant through VTAC for semester 2, I can't guarantee that though. All I know for sure is that it's too late to transfer for this semester, unless you manage to convince the uni (probably not likely).

... That's not the unit guide. The unit guide should be on moodle, and details all your assessments and who to contact for specific things about the unit, as well as some summary of the curriculum.

Computational science is nothing like computer science - computational science is basically just learning how to make a computer do things for you (eg, calculations), whereas computer science you'll actually learn about computers.

Also, internal transfer will do it fine, just gotta maintain a distinction average (which is easily doable if you go to everything and put in some effort weekly)

Many of the units are exactly the same between the two though.

Just read that unit guide. Seems as though attendance at tutorials (or labs) is only worth 2.5% and they don't seem to have a requirement … Quite happy with this if it holds true.

Thanks for the suggestion but looking for the actual degree!

So I need to wait until semester 1 ends and see my prospects?

Many of the units are exactly the same between the two though.

Not really - the computational science major is a lot more narrow than the computer science degree. It really depends on what Reus wants out of the computer science degree, of course - but it's really important to be able to distinguish the different, because someone might sign up for the computational major, and then find out it's not all what they were expecting because they actually wanted the computer science units.

Thanks for the suggestion but looking for the actual degree! So I need to wait until semester 1 ends and see my prospects?

I'm not too sure on the processes for internal transfers myself, however many people on here (off the top of my head, slothpomba and Ned Nerb) know a shit-ton about it, so wait for one of them to weigh in (particularly since Ned Nerb has changed degrees via internal transfer 4 times or some similar crazy number like that - don't take the advice of people who haven't been through the system when surrounded by people like that)

Well, it's too late for the internal transfer for now. (at least for my faculty..I think it has something to do with census date although I don't take any science unit this semester) Again for my case, there will be an online form around May. You may need to submit a hard copy depending on your faculty.

My time to shine!
Computational Sci is a subset of Computer Science. Computer Science allows you to take units from the more generalised information technology degree such as Data Management, Systems Development where as Computational Science doesn't, it just deals with that - Computational Science. In my view, Computational Science is the difficult part of IT, it has EXTREMELY heavy ties with high level mathematics and 'being good with computers' doesn't cut it. You'll study how computers/programs/algorithms/data structures work at an abstract level.

Fortunately, few businesses see the difference in Computational Science vs Computer Science, so with either Computer Science or the Computational Science major you should be set! I'd say, unless you 100% sure you have a deep passion for Computer Science take Computational Science within your science degree.

I think I am single-handedly putting the barista at Fibonacci's kids through university.

"Back again?" he asks with a wry smile, not needing to wait for my order, as I return for what feels like the thirtieth time that day.

Perhaps it's time to reduce my coffee intake.
