It says 18th Feb here.

Quick question. What exactly are workshops? Are units with workshops not supposed to have lectures and/or labs with them?
Thanks!

From the workshops I've had so far, they're pretty much 1-2 hour class discussion/debate. Just a room where everyone pitches in their thoughts towards the most recent lecture. They're quite different to tutorials - but not so much.

Honestly though, it depends on the faculty and unit. Like the tutorials I have for my IR major are completely different to tutorials from my Science units.

Hey guys, how do i accept but defer my first round offer for my course at Monash this year?

Only graduate in 17' but i read in HS this morning you have to write to Monash.

"The University allows you to defer your course for up to 12 months. In certain cases (e.g. financial difficulties, compulsory military service), you can apply to extend this to 24 months. There is no cost to defer and you will not be charged any fees while you are on deferment.

When deferring your offer, you are guaranteed your place but are choosing to delay starting your course. You must defer your offer by the enrolment date in your offer letter."

http://www.monash.edu/admissions/study-options/defer

Here's online method
create a Monash computer account
login to WES
click Apply for course deferment
check your details and eligibility for deferment and choose your Deferment return date
keep your confirmation of deferment.

Firstly - on the WES there's a section on majors - I thought we weren't supposed to decide majors until second year. Can we still enrol even without completing this section or do we need to know?
You don't really have to. I'm still not sure what my major will be, but for now, I've jotted down the most likely one.

Secondly, I'm enrolling in units for my Law/Commerce degree and I understand you don't have to do all the core commerce units in first year. Currently I plan on doing three of the core ones, and leaving management and marketing for later years, but what can I do in the place of one of those units? A commerce elective? Something from another faculty? Or am I making this up and in reality need to do a core unit?
I'm not so sure, since I'm not a Commerce student, but I would suggest you contact your (managing) faculty's student services area and visit them. They'll answer a lot of your queries regarding unit selection and what you will need to do to fulfil the requirements of your degree. Oh, and here are some course plans: this (under Course Maps) and this that they likely will show or write up for you.
VCE: Psych | Eng Lang | LOTE | Methods | Further | Chem
Uni: Bachelor of Science (Hons) - genetics
Current: working (sporadically on AN)

Is everyone going to an information session tomorrow at 11:30am (to 1:00pm)? Or is it just Engineering or Commerce students? Or Engineering and Commerce students?

Nah, they are course information sessions. So only people from your course will attend. Mine is on Thursday for example.

You can pretty much do whatever unit you like, given that you satisfy the prerequisites. Just make sure you know how many open electives you have so you don't end up not having enough units left to complete your major(s). Lots of people choose to do all core units in first year because they don't know what they want to major in or what other units they want to take.

I also chose to save two core units for later years, and instead started taking units towards my majors in semester two of my first year, e.g. I did Principles of Accounting and Finance in semester one, which allowed me to do Corporate Finance (for my finance major) and Introduction to Financial Accounting (for my accounting major) in semester two.

The standard course plans usually recommend completing your core units in first year, but you don't have to. I don't know about Law, but Commerce is pretty flexible regarding when you do your units, as long as you eventually complete all your core units and a major.

I went to the enrollment info session today, and it said I needed to do 6 engineering units and 2 commerce units in the first year of my course (Comm/Eng). However, the handbook for 2016 states that I need to do 4 engineering and 4 commerce? http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2016handbooks/maps/map-e3005.pdf

So confusing.

4/4 is the way to go. I ended up with 5/3 last year, planning to do 4/4 at the start of the year. It really doesn't matter, unless you have 96 credit points before graduating for each degree (well thats for me).

Just make sure you have your core units and pre-requisites for second year completed in first year.

Welcome Jaffys, i look forward to avoiding you all and watching you all block entrances.

You'll join 15 clubs and never go to any. You'll be super keen and buy all your books (hah!) early (hah!) from the campus bookstore (hah!). You'll probably catch a wrong train or bus at least once, just dont wind up under a bridge like me. Regardless though, it will be a blast. Welcome to the start of the rest of your life.

We'll fire up the Monash Jaffy thread (like i have done in previous years) closer to the start.

RE: Meetup, i did it once. IT was awkward as fuck. It's worth trying again but the scars are still there. Maybe im just delirious from lack of sleep for even suggesting it.

First time on campus today since June. I forgot how long this bus trip was.

But I'm looking forward to seeing ol' pal Clayton again!

>gets approached by a socialist? i have never seen an anti-capitalist before so i thought why not, 5 min talking to these people cant hurt
>they start talking about how bad capitalism is
>they ask what subjects did i do
>i reply 'i did history revolutions.. so i saw how shit communism is"

Maybe ill keep my mouth shut next time
