Ooh...could you post up what they say? I'm interested in both Finance and Actuarial Science (or maybe Economics). I'm not sure what to major in. Two would great.
Boy this thread moves fast, or maybe I'm just slow hmm. Anyways, I went and asked and this is what I found out:
1. For my intake (2014), there is a very large overlap between Finance and Actuarial, something like 5 or 6 units that overlap. Note that your degree is probably
different from mine, e.g. I think they've changed the aero degree every year for the past 3 years (don't ask me why...)
2. Technically, it is possible for me to complete 8 Finance units and 8 Actuarial units + 6 core units without having to do any extra commerce units (still 16 commerce, 26 engineering)
3. However, there is a faculty rule that states only 2 units (not including compulsory ones) can overlap for separate majors. e.g. I could do all 6 overlapping units, but only 2 could count to Finance and Actuarial. So I could end up with a Finance major made up of:
2 Finance only units, 4 Overlapping units that only count towards finance, 2 Overlapping units that count towards finance and actuary, 2 actuary only units.
So, I'd satisfy requirements for a Finance Major (8 units) but not the Actuary Major (4 units). Or if I chose to major in Actuary with the exact same units I could, but I couldn't get the Finance Major as well.
I hope that makes sense, but tl;dr you can choose units from different majors if you want, but ultimately you can only end up with one major.

EDIT: Oh, and I saw some messages about PASS sessions. Last year I didn't register and rocked up with my friend who had registered to see what PASS was like. At the end of the session the PASS leader said that he'd be happy for me to stay for the entire semester even though I hadn't registered. So...
