In a very weak cohort with a very strong student, is it best to not do that class because of the likelihood of not getting 1st rank in SACs? I mean to say, from one of my classes there are many people that do absolutely nothing, and yet there is a student that has got a 50 study score...

what is all this about cohorts? does it matter what ranking you are? Like seriously, if it was that way, why don't all the smart people do subjects like psych and end up top in the subject instead of something like 3rd?
I know that in all my subjects I'm not top, i guess I may be somewhere near the top. Ish. Does that scale me down or something?

Wait a second, I just realised I don't actually know what a cohort is. ::D

Sorry I know this doesn't answer your question at all :)
Happy enough after one hell of a year.

No.
If there is a large margin between you and the third place student, then it will make hardly any difference to you. Assuming your cohort is consistent through their SAC's and exams, they won't affect your study score.

Your cohort are your classmates

Yes, it matter where you rank in your classes and the size of it matters as well. The whole vce system is quite complicated at first.
The ranking is so that everyone will be fitted in a bell curve and be scored accordingly.

just as we're on this thread (sorry for hijacking) but does this mean that if a person is ranked HIGHER than you in terms of SACS and then you ace the EXAM/S and achieve something higher than this higher-ranked person, CAN YOU STILL GET A STUDY SCORE HIGHER THAN THIS PERSON?

For example, in my school for specialist maths, the cohort is full of 'smart' people... they absolutely killed all the SACS and exams last year. If i was ranked lower than these people but score a higher exam score than them, I still won't be able to obtain a higher study score than them?

Isn't the answer an obvious yes? The sacs usually only account for 1/3 of your total marks or something...unless I'm forgetting something important.

Definitely yes, I was 3rd/4th for SACs in my cohort I think last year. I've heard that they rank you in quartiles, ie in a cohort of 20 kids, 6th can't score higher than 5th, 11th can't score higher than 10th etc, but within your quartile you can score anything (3rd can score higher than 1st), but that might be just a rumour. You can definitely get the highest study score without being rank #1 SACs though.

That's ridiculous lol. So if 5th like completely failed the exam, then what?

question quickly: how do you know what quartile you're in? or is it just estimation comparing your marks to other people in the class? or did your teacher tell you?

is a cohort the whole year level put together for a subject, or does it go by individual classes?
