Legal? Hard or easy?

Hi!

I'm just wondering if Legal Studies 3&4 is hard or easy, and also about the scaling...

For an aspiring lawyer/pharmacist, would you guys recommend it to a strong Languages/Science student?

Legal Studies isn't that easy or hard, you just have to remember and understand a lot of information. You don't need to have done Units 1 and 2 to succeed in Year 12 Legal Studies. It is not like maths, where they can really trick you. If you know your stuff inside-and-out, then you'll go a long way to doing well in Legal Studies. There isn't any scaling with Legal Studies (going off previous years). Anything above 40 raw stays the same; if you get below 40 raw, then it scales down 1. Doing VCE Legal Studies isn't essential to becoming a lawyer; you can do Law in university and not have done Legal Studies in high school. To answer your question, it really comes down to you - if you like the subject, then do it. Because the more you enjoy a subject, that generally correlates to better results. Don't be deterred by the scaling of a subject either. I assume you've done Units 1 and 2 Legal Studies, if not, try it and see what you think - because that leads on to the sorts of things you can expect in Units 3 and 4 Legal Studies.

If you are a strong language and science student then Legal studies will be relatively straight forward for you. It's in essence a memorization and regurgitation subject.

Legal is about applying knowledge to task words. Simple as that, if you understand your knowledge inside out and comprehend what is required of you through a task word you will do well. Yet this simplicity is partially what makes legal difficult, if you ignore the task word or mistake it for another you can never gain full marks. Further, some questions are designed to throw you, in every subject, but in legal these tricky questions truly distinguish a 50 from a 45 and they are hard if you both have the knowledge of content and the task word. Example would be this years Civil pre-trial procedure question on access... Legal is very competitive, more so than other subjects, but if you're game and determined to do well, go for it!

Legal doesn't scale much so your raw mark is essentially what you get. Its not a hard subject as long as you work hard throughout the year, revising for sacs etc.
Also, I've heard that legal is not an accurate reflection of law in uni - its obviously not a prequisite, but its nice to have some rudimentary knowledge of your future career...
