I'd read the set texts, and try to make some notes as to themes, style, issues or whatever your study design asks you to look for.
if you go into the subject having already read the texts, then new connections and questions should occur to you as you go over the material in class.
so for example, some background knowledge of the main events and figures in a history subject will let you start off by asking critical questions.

Read all set texts... read any other relevant texts... and read the news a lot... - especially for legal studies. As a humanities student, you need to somehow show an awareness of the subject's application in the current world - everyday society. For example, pay close attention to Aussie politics and even recent high profile law cases for legal studies - you will need to show this current knowledge in the exam.
Don't be concerned about the memorization, because it will almost come naturally as you read and re-read stuff throughout the holidays and into the school year. By the end of year, it will just be a matter of fine tuning and selecting the best of pre-learned knowledge.
