Vbulletin + apple / android!?

Hey
Was wondering if you will consider Vbulletin over smf?  I've had lots of past experience with forums and especially vb.  You have the ability to do so much,  and above all,  administration is easy and simple!
I haven't actually used smf before,  but I just thought vb would go alright :)

Also,  is there a chance for an AN app?!

There's no point in changing from SMF to VB now, it won't make any sense to do that, plus I prefer SMF anyway

In terms of an app, I have the Android SDK so I'm willing to write an app for that - I'd have to brush up on Java though

But there's the issue of iOS and I don't have the Apple SDK (it's too expensive) - it's a subscription service

Aw why not?!

Yeah,  but android would be a great start! Anyone else got the skill?!  You could create a project!

Not too sure about the AN app, but there is an SMF app: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2504

Popular forums such as XDA developers use it.

As for the notes/tutoring/book review, functionality, tough call.

If you've ever seen the bodybuilding.com application on android and I'd assume apple,  you'll find that there's like a portal with exercises,  and forums,  inbox.  So your notes and book review could be incorporated like that?

Various forum packages hold advantages over others and vice versa. So there is sense in doing it, not to mention the eye candy that comes with almost every other (mainstream) forum package I know of. SMF looks like arse. Plus, from what I know, you can migrate from forum package to forum package with relative ease, so that shouldn't be a major issue.

plus I prefer SMF anyway

Well I dont :)

Out of curiosity, have you written Android apps before?

But there's the issue of iOS and I don't have the Apple SDK (it's too expensive) - it's a subscription service

You also need a Mac. If you own one, the price of the iOS Developer Program subscription should be negligible IMO.

I haven't written any proper apps, mostly just playing around with the SDK and making rubbish which I test, like I made an app to help me learn vocabulary haha! D:

Yes, I know I need a Mac for the iOS developer program, and no I don't have a Mac

@SDPHD, as far as I know the AN SMF codes have been modified a fair bit from stock SMF, which is why transition/upgrades are difficult. On top of that we only really have one dev (David), that makes it hard and unrealistic, ah well. :P

Yep. Although I have re-coded everything to make upgrading easier, converting to an entirely new architecture means most of the site and all of our mods to the forum itself would need to be redone. Besides, vBulletin is expensive. All the forum software architectures are basically the same, the only thing that differs is some default features, the way things are organized, and the aesthetics. All of that is fairly easily changed... At least compared to starting over completely.

I'm all for it if it can be done. I can install the SMF mod that was referenced, but I don't like the fact that it would cost $2.95 or whatever it was for students to download. And we don't even get a piece of that. :p However, my phone sucks and the site looks great on it.
