Did they boost up your scores? And by how much?

Although I haven't had one previously. All 6 of my end of year Examinations were approved for a Derived Examination Score. In the letter I received it said that they take the best out of the derived score and the actual score. So if your derived score is lower than your actual it won't go up at all. I believe they use your GAT marks (in relation to the subject) and SAC scores to calculate it. Due to this, if you performed very well in both SACs and the GAT, your Derived Examination Score could be much higher than your actual and hence boost it up by a lot.

How did you apply for a derived score AND sit for the exam?
I don't think I know how these work. I thought that you could only get a derived score if you were really sick in hospital or something and couldn't sit the actual exam....
Please explain  ???

I applied under the circumstances of personal trauma in the lead up to end-of-year exams.

"If a student becomes ill or experiences an accident or personal trauma at the time of their VCE examinations, they may apply for a Derived Examination Score." - VCAA

I just found this link which may clear up the original question
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/correspondence/bulletins/2004/october/04OCTLI1.pdf

Although, it is from 2004 I'm pretty sure most of it still applies.

ohhh ok. I didn't know about that. So do you have to apply before you sit the exam?

You have to apply within 7 days of completing your last exam (for that exam period i.e you can't apply for mid year exams one week after your last end of year exam)

My Physical Education and methods 2 were on the same day, and i was unlucky enough to be so sick i had to have a drip cos i couldn't drink water without vomiting...
But my methods score was better than my derived and my PE score was worse. So they took my PE score as derived. :)
Killer day :/

EDIT: You apply by filling out a form outline what was it, when it occured, how long it was around, and how it affected you. You also have to have a Dr's Cert and your teacher has to sign or something.

I also think so.

I had a derived examination score approved for my physics midyear a few years ago, but my examination score was sufficiently high for it to be used instead of the derived score, despite the circumstances in which I took the exam. But why are you asking about derived examination scores now? They're for unexpected events that happen around the time of the exams.

Is it possible to do really really well in SACs, for example, I was top ranked for Spesh at my school, and I ended up recieving 100/100 for the SAC component and then make up an excuse to get a DER so that I'd technically get a higher Study Score?

It's just funny because in ALL of my subjects, I did far better on SACs than on the Exam, like in fact, Chem (idk what I got) and English (98 for U3 and 100 for U4) were the only subjects where I didn't get 100 in SACs. Maybe I should have just made up symptoms for some rare disease during the exam period! DAMN!

Well if you have no morals... then yes (kidding :P)

If you're DES was approved and you performed similarly on the GAT to that of your SACs, then yes your derived Examination score would probably be higher than that of your real Exam score and thus your study score would have been higher.

No, I wouldn't do something like that because it's amoral, but I was just pointing out a hypothetical flaw in VCAA's system of awarding DESes. The GAT is also a joke, but regardless, I still think there are some people who benefit more than they should from a DES and some who are actually disadvantaged and don't get enough compensation.
