The ATARNotes.com referral competition.

Greetings to our predominantly Victorian ATARNotes members.

Many of you have been buzzing about what the referral points field in your profiles mean. The end of the speculation is nigh. Here are all the details.

Most important thing is first. What can you win from this competition?

The first month of the competition is a trial (a beta-test, to work out the kinks and to tighten the screws on the people who will invariably attempt to cheat), and we will be giving away $210 in Coles-Myer giftcards to the leaderboard winners. $100 for first, $70 for 2nd, $40 for 3rd. If all goes well, we will launch another competition in February. Depending on the success of the first competition, we will award a larger prize pool.

How do you win?

Give your mates who aren't yet AN members your referral link to sign up (this is found in your profile). IT WILL LOOK LIKE http://www.atarnotes.com/register.php?refID=XXXXXXX (but the XXXXXX will be replaced with your ID. Don't forget to replace the XXXXXX or you won't be credited).

We're focussing on interstate referrals from NSW, WA and SA, but we will also award points for Vic referrals. We really want to grow this site into a national community, so the more of your interstate mates that sign up for you, the better chance you will stand.

The points systems for referrals is as follows:

If the person you refer is from the same state as you:
Signup = 5 points
Posts = 1 point per post (capped at 20 posts)
Notes uploads = 20 points per notes upload
Tutor registration = 10 points
Book submission = 3 points
Book review = 3 points

If the person you refer is from a different state, (e.g. if you're Victorian and refer a NSW, or if you're from NSW and refer a Vic) you get 3x the points! So:

Signup = 15 points
Posts = 3 points per post (capped at 20 posts)
Notes uploads = 60 points per notes upload
Tutor registration = 30 points
Book submission = 9 points
Book review = 9 points

But won't the interstaters have a massive advantage over us?

No. After many long discussions into the dead of the night with David while implementing this, we finally decided that interstate people would only get 1x points for referring their interstate mates. This is to keep it fair to Victorians, because our new interstate users will have a much larger pool of friends to refer than you guys will. Plus, the big points aren't in signups. They're in notes uploads so encourage all of your friends to upload their notes and make posts!

If you cheat, I will end you.

There is zero tolerance for cheating. Any malicious attempt to abuse this system will result in a permanent ban from the site. The integrity of this competition will be taken very seriously.

Will staff participate?

Only Victorian moderators (non-global) are allowed to participate. This competition is off-limits to global mods and admins. But global mods and admins are encouraged to refer their friends too! If they have friends. I'm not sure any of our staff has friends :(

Competition dates

Trial competition runs from NOW until midnight on January 31st, 2012.

Prize pool is as above.

Please get referring. Even if you don't think you'll win, you can really help the site grow and be amazing. The bigger AN grows, the more we can give back to you guys. We're never going to forget who made us strong and awesome. If you can help secure us a national student base for the site, you will reap the benefits. Get cracking!

We'll be putting up a leaderboard ASAP so you guys can check your progress and we'll also have a live feed of referral point gains up top!

Also, if there is a significant uptake of the competition (i'm talking 200 referrals or more), then I will definitely increase the prize pool and the number of paid places.

How would we detect hundreds of 0 post accounts all signing up from one referral link only seconds apart, from the same IP? Not sure, how would you do it?

"Only Victorian moderators (non-global) are allowed to participate. This competition is off-limits to global mods and admins. But global mods and admins are encouraged to refer their friends too! If they have friends. I'm not sure any of our staff has friends "

Clearly this was designed to thwart the National Mods who happen to study in the ACT, where NSW people are aplenty!

(but yes, none of us have friends :'( oh well)

EDIT: joking obviously, but I'll be on the look out for any troublesome issues.

Proxies are nothing new to us. You really think we haven't had people try to evade bans through them? Look, it really wouldn't be hard catching this. At the minimum to ensure the integrity of the competition, all we have to do is investigate the winners. That's only 3 people that we have to investigate, which isn't particularly hard to do a detailed search and find some anomalies. We'll make sure it's a fair competition so you guys just go ahead and do your part and start referring :)
