No you don't.

edit: i mean, yes you can do esd2 without esd1.

you can do ESD 2 without ESD 1.
theres some post grads for engineering (if you are going to do a masters of eng) that require ESD 1 pre reqs believe (i think its chemical eng). look on the subject requirements for that...
i did ESD 2 without ESD 1 and found it hard (well im just not that type anyway) although i heard ESD 1 didnt really relate to much ESD 2 anyway. Anyway long story short, withdrew before the census date :P but as i said i really disliked it because it wasnt my thing.

you could always try and withdraw before the date like i did :P or just go to some random lectures without being enrolled into it lol

Don't do ESD1 unless you need it as a prerequisite for second year engineering subjects. It's pointless

@ bridger...why didn't you like it? Was it because the work was difficult/ weird/ wasn't your thing?

I'm trying to discover my "thing" too....But with the way things are going with my "imaginary course plan" i don't think i can do ESD 1. Im jusmping straight to ESD 2, but worrying if im expecting too much out of it :P

My friends who did ESD 1 said it was useless and plain boring. You will learn more practical things from doing another science like physics.

Not all of ESD1 was pointless.
The stuff on Bernoulli's equation was pretty useful :) (well, when I did it in my year anyway)

ESD 1 was the WORST subject I have ever done at uni! If ESD 1 is required for ESD 2, I don't know why anyone would be enrolled in it. As for ESD 2, the lecturer for programming was so bad I was scarred to the point I'm only giving programming a go now since the programming lectures for ESD 2 were so bad you could use them as a form of torture.

One thing I loved with ESD 2 was when we had to unscramble a corrupted media file and it played music. The Andrew Ooi lectures are the best. Enjoy Uni next year.

We learnt that in physics 2, but then again if you were doing ESD 2, you might not have room for physics 2.

I got to agree with dc302 here, don't waste time doing ESD1, do another science. This will allow you to cover another field, and you honestly won't be missing anything by not doing ESD1. Jumping straight to ESD2 is a wise move.
The majority of the exam had questions like ''Why did this random oil rig blow up?'' with the answer being along the lines of bad planning, be careful next time etc. The exam is a complete joke. It's just silly common sense stuff wrapped into a subject which is supposed to be an ''introduction'' to engineering. The Matlab part of the course is taught horribly, so just skip to ESD2. You won't be behind anyone cause no one learnt how to use it properly in first semester.
I don't know anyone who did this subject and didn't think it was a complete joke. I think everyone got a shock when they realised how hard ESD2 is compared to the joke of ESD1 in first semester.

Sorry for bumping a VERY old thread but after reading many bad experiences about ESD 1 (particularly this thread) I've decided against ESD 1 and instead to follow the advise above me and pick another science subject. The problem is, which one should I do that is most beneficial for a mech eng degree? So far I've got Calc 2, Physics 1 and Finance 1. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
Again if this is inappropriate, sorry and feel free to move this.

If I do Linear Algebra in sem 1, what maths do I do in sem 2?

Engineering Maths would be the next one. This depends if you want to take 3 math subjects in 1 year. You could also take Engineering Comp if you wanted to in Sem 2.

Yeah I wouldn't mind doing 3 maths actually...beats doing non maths subjects. But wouldn't I not be allowed to do engineering maths since its a level 2 subject and I would only have 37.5 science points after sem 1?
