I met one guy at the adelaide interviews who wanted to transfer from a health science course (pharm, nutrition ?, can't remember) at monash to adelaide med. he only got the interview for dent (hence he was there), but they didn't let him in med. just thought this information might help.

I'm not entirely sure, but my friends had a umat of 86 and still got an interview at UNSW. One of them, I think UNSW, takes a 50/50 basis on ur ATAR and GPA, but if ur a second year transfer I am not sure this applies.
As a general guideline, an 80 average is a good uni mark to maintain for transfers.

Yeah generally you can't transfer into medicine (eg. Going from 1st year pharm/biomed to 2nd year med), in your case maybe your thinking about applying as a non-standard. You can apply as a non-standard at JCU, UNSW, UNCLE, UTAS and UWS. If you've started a degree you're ineligible to apply at some places. A solid average like 80+ and a UMAT of 90%+ (50 in all sections for UNCLE). Unfortunately UNSW requires a minimum 96 ATAR even from university students. However, for you given you'll be seeking 2013 entry it may work out easier/faster to go for grad med.

hmmm interesting.

I had an Atar of 91 .. and im planning on doing umat again .. but will probably only get between 60-80 as i got 75 or so last time and really cant see myself doing any better. ( i dont really know what to do  to "prepare" , i did like 30 past papers last time haha).
and im averaging around 77-82% or so for pharmacy last year. going into second year im hoping to average the same.

the thing is ..... I wouldn't want to do grad med as i would have to finish another 2 years of pharmacy and still have to do the gamsat .. and after doing a practice one yesterday i honestly dont think id be capable of passing.

hmmmm
do you know of anyone who has been accepted as non-standard? do they happen often?.
thanks.

also the other thing is , ive received an offer for Optomistry .. but im not sure if by doing optom i have any advantage over doing pharmacy - in regards to being accepted into med.
the optom course i applied for is 3 years ( as they do trimesters) and i have 3 years pharmacy left over too .. so im not entirely sure. ... ..  doing pharm its incredibly difficult to keep a high GPA. hmm.

Yeah I've heard pharmacy is really difficult so well down on the good average. The UMAT might be a bit low for those places, still prepare hard for the UMAT you could very well suprise yourself :) JCU is good option (no UMAT and a gpa of 6.25-6.5/7). With regards to optometry, it is probably as difficult as pharmacy, however (I assume you're talking about deakin's course) it a masters level program so when/if you apply for graduate entry at most places that is instant 7/7 gpa. This means that you would not have to do that well in your GAMSAT. End of the day you need to be happy, if medicine is something you want badly then I think do optom and work incredibly hard for your GAMSAT and UMAT an you can either apply as a non-standard or do grad. You're already in a very enviable position so don't worry, hope that helps.

I'd advise you to check out the pagingdr discussion thread on pharmacy entry to medicine, there are a lot of people there in the same situation who are talking about similar things

it a masters level program so when/if you apply for graduate entry at most places that is instant 7/7 gpa. This means that you would not have to do that well in your GAMSAT.

Definitely not "most" places. From memory, only one graduate school will stipulate to a 7.0 GPA and that's only if you have a doctorate.

Thanks man appreciate it.
Just to clarify ... JCU dont require umat? oh wow. The other thing is .. how do i actually apply as a non standard? because when i applied through UAC and VTAC earlier this year , i couldnt find such a thing haha.

also with deakins optom course .. its a masters degree thus 7/7 GPA ?? im really quite confused on this , please explain? ...how does it work like that? .. its still bachelor in vision science? + masters in optom? why 7/7?
and why would it mean i wouldnt work as hard in Gamsat .. isnt gamset set in stone? .. like umat? no 50 in each section and no entry??

The thing is , I dont really know how to prepare so well for the umat.... Is there any other way than doing alot of past papers?
and gamsat , once again is there any other way than doing alot of their past papers + writing essays?

thanks alot for the help man . appreciate it.

Yeah sorry maybe not most places I think UQ gives automatic 7/7 and some other places give bonus gpa points +1 or +1.5 for having a masters

For the UMAT I did heaps of papers and found it didn't really help that much for section 1 or 2. I think confidence on the day and taking in and understanding heaps of information is important for doing well. As for the gamsat I have no idea, maybe ask Russ. I kind of want to hear as well.

mmm, i'm still skeptical on the + for having a masters. You might get +2% for relevant prior study, but I don't think masters is going to impress the uni enough to warrant a bonus to GPA

And for GAMSAT discussion, there's a GAMSAT subforum where you can post questions
