Dilemma

Hey guys

I applied for an irregular offer from The University of Melbourne and they approved it today. I keep changing my mind about which university I want to go to. It's between Bachelor of Commerce and Engineering at Monash or Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Engineering at Melbourne. I have gone through the pros and cons for both unis but find myself unconvinced of which one I'd like to see myself at.

I enjoyed mathemetics and physics at school and was also interested in business management. I mainly want to do engineering but I believe commerce would open up more options and strengthen my interest in the business side of things. My main concerns with Melbourne are: the balance between commerce and engineering, the Melbourne model is new and hasn't proved to be successful yet, the lack of pure engineering experience before seeking job opportunities (only 2 years), no requirements to complete work experience during the course, and the requirements to gain a CSP into the Master of Engineering course after completing the Bachelor of Commerce.

On the other hand, Melbourne has a great campus and I imagine that the uni life there would be much better than Monash. Also, Melbourne's held in high regard internationally (I would love to work overseas if I had the chance),

I would appreciate any advice you guys could provide me with.

Thanks!

I'm going to say Monash Commerce / Engineering, since
their course is well designed compared to the Masters of
Engineering, which as you said hasn't been relatively successful.
Plus, if you really feel passionate about engineering, it's good
to have the hands on engineering experience, which Monash
already has.

As to the campuses, I reckon it depends on which campus
you prefer
. For me, I live so close to Clayton. Hence, I chose
Monash over Melbourne because I can participate in club activities
easily even though I qualify for Melb. Commerce. But imagining
Melbourni uni life being better than Monash isn't really true,
Melbourne and Monash has different aspects that are good.

It really is up to you, but on the academic side, I'd pick comm/eng
because they already have an established system here at Monash.
B.Comm / B.Eco @ Monash 2012 - 2015

I'd pretty much dispute everything you've said about Melbourne being better. Having friends who study at that campus, there seems to be way more going on at Monash (Clayton) than at Melbourne - for the simple reason that because the campus is located at the city, people don't really hang around. They come for their classes and then go. Generally speaking, people find it harder to make friends and the clubs and societies have difficulty attracting people to their events more-so than Clayton. Because Clayton is where it is, people generally stay for the entire day, and thus have time to go to that event or BBQ.

In addition, I can guarantee you that the difference between international prestige between Melbourne and Monash doesn't exist. Both are GO8 universities, both are renowned for their Commerce and Engineering faculties. Sure, if the choice was between a non-GO8 uni (say, La Trobe) and Melbourne, I could see why you might be inclined to go to Melbourne. But if campus culture is what you're after, I'd go Monash (though I'm biased). The Clayton campus was ranked number 1 in Australia for campus culture by the National Union of Students back in 2009 (can't find the article, damn Wikipedia being down). I think that speaks for itself.

Thanks for your advice, it's making my decision much easier!

I live around 30mins from Clayton and 1 hour from Melbourne, but travelling isn't really an issue for me. I agree with you aes, the campuses are totally subjective. Personally, I'd prefer the city life.

I see what you mean grevenchorf, it does make sense that students from Melbourne wouldn't want to hang around too long. Thanks for the information about Monash's equally impressive global reputation. I am leaning towards Monash now.

I would love to here from students from either campus. :)
