Hi guys, I've tried as best I could to understand the unit system but I'm a little mind efd. So basically, I'm doing a double degree.. Could someone explain how many units we do a year? So how do I split my units evenly? And I know there's two semesters.. So does one unit subject equate to a semesters work or a years work? I'm very confused and in scared ill do it all wrong since I'm overseas. Of it helps, I'm doing commerce and arts. I also realize some units need a prerequisite for second and third years or something, how does that work? Help would be great :) also, there's some core units in commerce. Do I do them all in the first year?

Take a look at this: http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/student/progression/clayton-course-maps/2012-course-maps/0542-bachelor-of-commerce-and-bachelor-of-arts-2012.pdf (in particular the second page, which actually gives you an outline of what you should do).

Each semester is 24 credit points. With some exceptions to the rule, each unit is generally worth 6 (internships, placements etc are sometimes worth more). So this logically follows that you do four units a semester, which equals eight a year. So yes, a unit is completed in a semester, not a year.

Follow that map for your commerce degree, unless you want to get all of your core units out of the way in first year, and then you can just do 3 commerce units and 1 arts unit a semester. I'd probably just stick with the plan, makes for an easier load and lets you get stuck into some arts earlier on. You also won't get bitten by pre-requisites if you follow that, by the time you pick your own Commerce units in second semester of second year, you will have done all the required pre-reqs for most units.

Thanks, so following the plan I would have 2 core units leftover for second year, also with first year arts, do I pick the core sequences for my major and minot? And also, since there's 8 units a year are the arts and commerce subjects evenly spread on my timetable or is it like 4 commerce subs a semester followed by 4 arts the following?mty

Yep - pick the first year sequence for your Arts major and minor. Sometimes there is only one unit you can do a semester in a particular discipline in first year (e.g. media, criminology), sometimes you'll need to pick from a few subjects (politics).

There's no hard and fast rule with your timetable, you can do it in any order you want as long as it's all done by the end of your degree. What you'll find though is that the units are evenly spread across the semesters so it's pretty much impossible to do everything in one semester. You'll probably find that normally you'll have at least some arts and commerce units in each semester.

Hello fellow Arts/commerce student ^____^ ~

You do four subjects each semester (so 8 overall) - but some people overload and do five subjects per semester.

Commerce has 6 core units and another 2 you choose from a list of four (typically, you can get all those units done by end of second year, and start majoring by third year)
