Is doing interschool sports a waste of time? I'm doing a extracurricular event which is debating, lol...., I might be doing athletics to support my house to earn more points, like e.g. 100/200/400 metres sprint, long jump, discus and shotput. So i will have to juggle quite a lot with studying and training for sports.

I've done interschool sports last year though and athletics. I've played basketball, footy, rugby union and soccer in interschool sports.

Anybody thinks its a good idea to drop athletics and interschool sports?

Any VCE veterans went through the experience of playing sports and studying?

Help a clueless child out.

I used to do athletics, specialties were sprinting and high jump. This was from primary school till about year 9 though, stopped it because I had to do Japanese VSL (same day as athletics). Do you know how much training you would be doing for athletics? I did sprint training like twice a week, one hour sessions each.
I wouldn't say it's a waste of time as such, but you need to prioritise according to your academic goals I guess. If you are seriously training then it can be physically demanding. You already lift and do debating, that sounds like you are doing enough extra-curricular activities :)

I have been doing debating for almost 5 years now. I would NOT RECOMMEND dropping it. It is great for exploring different issues as well as other opinions.  I'm doing he asian five this year. Plus I play piano. Plus I swim (atleast twice a week).Plus I tutor others. You will be fine

I continued to play club basketball for most of VCE - for a while it was 2 matches a week - and also represented my school. I also regularly played sport with mates at lunchtime, as a release from the stifling class atmosphere. Although admittedly when exams loomed I was a lot more studious  ;)

abd, I'd definitely recommend going ahead with your athletics training. Instead of scrapping it, work your study around it. It may make your schedule more hectic, but balancing your academic life with a bit of exercise will feel like a release from the pressure of VCE. It will be beneficial to your sanity.

That said, if you feel like your sports/athletics are getting in the way of study, cut back  :)

I'm terrible with rebuttals and major comebacks. Feels weird being the only maths/science student in the debating team.

Hecktick lifestyle you have. I have to pepper my angus, fml.

You can always improve. I used to have to write down what the opposing team said, and my word-for-word rebuttal. And then i would just read off.  Now, our team just explores the different avenues of the topic, so we know it pretty well, an when they rebut, we have got another rebuttal lined up. Analogies work a treat:)

Keep on doing sport through VCE. It helps you concentrate better and also gives you an avenue to get your mind off the study. I did badminton, cross-country and aths during year 12 + lost of other extra-curricular stuff - public speaking etc. Year 12 is a rounded experience - the peak of your schooling life.

Did cricket, volleyball, softball, athletics, badminton, soccer every year from year 7 - 12. Missed whole days of school in year 12 because of sport. No regrets.

On the inverse, what about taking up a sport?  I was considering taking up Kickboxing as I no-longer have any skill in Cricket, Soccer or AFL.

I've found a lot of top debaters are actually maths/science students - don't feel odd!

Thought of not doing all of the sports (soccer, footy and basketball), but I'm going to play Rugby Union and do athletics and also debating :P.

Thanks guys, even though this thread is a like two weeks old or something.
