As far as I know physics is a pre-requisite for radiography at Monash ^

Nah, it's Physics or Biology

http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/1963/domestic-requirements.html?courseview=domestic

There are actually no courses which downright require Physics. The same goes for Biology, the only course which downright requires Biology is Dentistry at La Trobe (iirc)

Well to be honest, doing Physics won't open up any options for you if you're doing Chemistry as well, there are no university courses, that I know of, which requires VCE Physics as an absolute pre-requisite.

My opinion is, if you choose a subject, you can't go around saying you hate it, it's really your own fault you chose it and didn't research the topics you were going to cover. To be honest though, what did you expect in a VCE level Physics course then, if electricity, kinematics, dynamics and light aren't what interest you - did you expect to do like quantum mechanics or particle physics...like seriously?

I had no idea what to expect - my careers advisor suggested some subjects and I just took them. :P Hence, I definitely take responsibility for all the numerous subject selection blunders I've had. If there are any Year 9s and 10s reading this, I can only advise you that you need to have some sort of idea of where you're headed, or else you'll end up like me - studying a fair amount of subjects which you perhaps don't enjoy to a great extent.

To any yeah nines and tens reading this. I think the majority of people have a major career change at least once in their life. No one expects a fourteen year old or however old you are in year nine to know what they want to be graduating from in ten years time. And there are always alternate pathways. Don't stress. I had no idea where I was headed until the start of year twelve. And yeah, I hate my subjects, but I'd rather do that than feel depressed for three years because I'm supposed to know what I want to be but have no fucking idea!
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

Good point, brenden. It's incredibly difficult to know what you're going to like and not like so you just need to give everything a go (just like I did in the end) and accept that not everything will go your way. :)

Taken all info aboard! I agree that majority of people have a major career change but for me now in Year 9, I know what my strengths are and know what I enjoy (in terms of subjects) so I'm going to pursue those subjects in the near future.

I'm interested, you're obviously interested in a career in Medicine - shown by the fact that you want to sit the UMAT (and when you had your aims up, you really wanted to do well on the UMAT as well) - so why exactly do you wish to pursue a career in medicine? More importantly, what do you actually know about a career in Medicine?

Although I am keen on medicine, I want to do well on UMAT as I want to keep options open. It does not essentially mean I just want to do Med because I have been looking at other courses such as doing Nursing and I'm keen on teaching too.
As of now, my focus is leaning to medicine since I want to help patients both in a practical sense as well as through my clinical research. My focus on leaning to Med has changed but I guess going to JMSS might change that view :P

Going into a career in Medicine, I know you have to be emotionally ready. It's one thing to say that you want to do Med because you enjoy helping people but it's not use if you're hand is quivering with fear due to your emotions. That's one of the big things that you need to take a grip on but more on top of a career in Med... it's quite a long journey which involves absolute dedication (which is the same for all courses).

UMAT is really only required for Medicine and Dentistry - so there really isn't much of a "keeping options open" there :P

Wanting to help people in a practical way - well that's something that's very broad and that's something that a lot of professions do - it's not unique to Medicine even though, for some reason, that is portrayed as the case.

It's not about just being emotionally ready, it's about making sure that you actually want to do Medicine, it means that you want to do Medicine for the right reasons and you don't have a doubt in your mind that it is the path you want to take. And yes, it's a long journey which requires dedication, but it is not the same for all courses, many courses, you are out and working after three years, do you know how long you'll be learning for if you want to become a doctor?

I think, you know, this really reinforces my point that students usually don't really know what they want to be when they grow up and it's understandable why, many students choose courses such as Commerce, Medicine, Engineering and all that and have no clue what those courses actually teach and how they will get to their dream. I'm not saying you want to do medicine for the wrong reasons (because only you know those reasons), but what I'm saying is, make sure it's what you want to do - don't be influenced (unknowingly) by external pressures.

I know that it will take 10+ years to actually start working for Medicine once when you complete your residency, internship and passing your exams so that you can start specialising.

And I guess that's why I'm a lurker on AN since I want to find out as much as possible about these sort of things rather than be left behind and not know what to do with my life. Thanks for the advice Paul!

Yep, that's exactly right, it's a very long journey, one that is rewarding, but one that also requires you deeply enjoy what you are doing, the stereotypes aren't true, doctors don't just lounge around and earn big  money, they really work hard for what they earn and for the amount of education, hardship and difficulty they have to go through, they deserve every bit of the high salary they get later on.

But yeah, that said, it's good that you want to find out more and good luck :P
