3 years of HECS will be covered by La Trobe for these students? WOW

Also, what happens for those finishing school this year? No places because they're all taken up by those who have been forced to defer?

Latrobe could have handled this better.
They should have asked for volunteers.
Their alternative offer would appeal to some at least.

There is nothing wrong with a gap year, if you are guaranteed a spot in your preferred course the following year.
You can chill, travel, work, pursue other interests.
You dont even 'lose' a year, because if they waive HECS for three years, thats a whole year of your life you dont have to work solely for the purpose of repaying your HECS loan.

I think the issue isn't so much with the people forced to defer, at least they still get to do the damn course, it's the issue with the 2012 graduates not being able to get in :(

Yes, the Latrobe stuff-up will be felt mostly by the next 2-3 years of Y12 graduates, until this year's over-enrolment washes through

Even though I may not be able to get into Latrobe (because I dont have all the prereq's) I find it dissapointing that they could not handle this situation. They offer 45 places into their dentistry course, 30 of which will be taken by those who will be forced to have a gap year, or defer. That leaves 15 places to the graduates of 2012. Honestly. That many people want to do dentistry, what will the cut off be, 99.95?

No it's not that simple, there will be a flow on effect. This is the simple reason why.

They'll end up offering those 15 places to those with really high ATARs, however, the ones with the high ATARs will be more likely to head interstate for Medicine or Dentistry elsewhere. Hence, a lot of them will reject the offer. La Trobe will know this, hence they have to over-offer by quite a large margin in order to counter the fact that their rejection rates will be higher. This means that there might have to be forced deferrals again due to the high over-offering. This will then lead onto next year as well...etc.

paulsterio, was wondering, if you get accepted into a dental course in Melbourne, why would the reasons be to reject and do another dentistry course interstate?

I really doubt this will happen, given that they're now offering a third of the places they normally would. Any flow on effect will be pretty minor

Hmm, not entirely true. I doubt people would take dentistry interstate if they got an offer from La Trobe - because La Trobe is in their home state and that.
And if your theory about the high ATARs going interstate for medicine etc is true, this would have happened this year as well. Yet the ATAR cutoff for dentistry at La Trobe is fairly high anyway.
And Russ has a point.

In response to discussion about interstate, lots of people would move interstate, since it's pretty much the same, plus you've got more prestige in uq and Adelaide . Particularly uq because it's now arguably the best undergrad dent school, and to be honest my professor told me if one wants to specialize their chnces are much higher. Even in second year I've got friends leaving la trobe via transfer for these two ins. So I guess what I'm saying is la trobe will definately over offer but in proportion to the spots, so maybe thirty to th fifteen....

How much better could they have handled it, after making the over offer error? Kick all thirty out? There are other schools kid can go to... Like Griffith and csu...
