^did not notice until you said that
Well, she is Lady Gaga... Also known to hatch out of eggs and sing songs with names such as 'hair',  and lyrics such as 'i am my hair ... I am as free as my hair' .. I'm no fan but she makes headlines quite often...
I probably wouldnt have noticed either but I remember reading something about her 'meat dress' in the paper

Chapel st?
Seduce has really good dresses, but nothing too 'unconventional'
or you could always try online depending on how far away your formal is :) websites like asos are pretty reliable

Don't know much since I'm not a  shopper of formal clothes, but I'm just going to say try going to DFO in South Yarra, just to check out what types of dresses you like.

Bariano is definitely a good place to go, the only thing is there is a chance that someone might end up with the same dress as you. (On a side note, it doesnt really matter if someone wears the same dress, its a bit awkward if anything. I suppose going to a girls school, it definitely caused some controversy though)  Some of my friends got some nice dresses from there. Definitely try Chapel Street and Bridge Road, if your in that price range. I looked online, there are some really good American designers like Tony Bowls, Sherri Hill and Jovani, but their dresses cost around 400-500 mark. They are reliable, and worth it I suppose. I was really really cheap and took a Sherri Hill design that I liked and got it made for less than 100 dollars when it costs about 400 online. Be carefull with some of those Asian sites with cheap dresses that have copies of the American versions. I found which which was selling the dress that I wanted for about 120 dollars, but I emailed them several times and they had no idea what I was talking about and sorta werent really professional in their correspondence with me. Two of my friends bought dresses from such sites, one of them got her looking kinda different from the picture that was shown and was too big, the other friend didnt get hers at all. She sent them an email about a month before the formal, just to see the status of her dress, turns out they couldnt make her the dress, but had conveniently forgotten to tell my friend about it. My friend got the dress she wanted made by the same person I did. But even then, both our dresses didnt exactly look like the designer versions they were based on. We found it hard to find the same sort of material etc.

Anywho, what sort of dress are you looking for? Floor length? Cocktail dress? One shouldered? Colour? LOL I was a bit of a turd, got a Pink dress. If you want something 'extravagant' you could go Gasp, try the Chadstone one. Or alternatively, there is a shop called Vivid which sells the same sort of dresses. And I may have been mistaken, but I'm pretty sure there is a Bariano in Chadstone. K, just go Chadstone LOL

^^ two girls at the year 12 formal last year rocked up in the same dress ... They avoided eachother the whole night and took turns posing for the group photos ... I guess it does matter to some people...

Yeah that happened to 3 different dresses at mine. The first 'double dress issue' had the two people find out before, apparently one of the girls was really upset, but they decided it didnt matter. The second issue- it was decided that the person who bought the dress first got to keep it, but the other girl had conveniently lost the receipt to the $300 dress. The third one involved my friend, but they didnt realise until at the formal, and were totally ok with it :)

LOL Umm I got it made by a curry person I knew who usually makes blouses for Sari's LOL She did a good job on it though. But My dress had a removable asymmetric skirt, and the length of my skirt at the back was a bit too short so yeah, I suppose I wasnt too happy with that. A couple of other people I know went to professional dressmakers, I would recommend that.

Gosh i go to work and come back to find a meat dress on my screen! Haha thanks so much for all your advice guys, exactly the kind of stuff I've been looking for @ Stick, such a cute dress, I shall look into it!
@ Kazdawg thanks so much for all the ideas, and i swear if someone wears the same dress as me i shall physically/mentally harm them. Modcloth! I can't believe I forgot that! Thanks! Harbour town and South Yarra are definite places on my lurking list ;)
