Does this apply to you?

It is my understanding that those uni students of La Trobe who commit certain academic misconduct can receive a hefty penalty of receiving a zero mark for an assessment such as cheating on exams and not acknoledging references. Is this just La Trobe or do other universities do the same?

Cheating, or an attempt to cheat, will result in a failure in your examination or exclusion from the university if found guilty. (Monash University)

Cheating at all (most) universities could not be more serious - it could really have career-affecting outcomes.

In addition to that, universities can blacklist you so that you won't be able to enrol into any Australian university for a certain period of time.

It's the real world.  It's very serious.

Sounds like someone is completing the Academic Integrity Module :)

As an FYI to all La Trobe students, everyone must complete it via the LMS. You'll get your la trobe account details in the statement of account (sent through the mail).

Every uni these days uses turnitin (look it up if you don't know what it is). What I'm curious about is it's accuracy. Can anyone comment on their experiences with turnitin? How up to date is it too? (e.g. if an article was posted yesterday, would it pick it up)

Turnitin is very powerful. It can also be calibrated to compare to last year's submissions for that class, so you can't even borrow old work

Yeah, I did the module yesterday day and managed to pass it but that still doesn't make me feel any better about it. It was easy as there were only 10 Qs and reading all that info helps but yeah real scary and the thought of having to cite every single referrence god damn it, how tedious that's gonna be. Worried I might accidentally leave a reference out or something.

That's funny, I didn't receive the statement yet, it's getting very annoying. When did yours come through? None of my friends going to La trobe got theirs either.

Although there can be some very tough penalties for plagiarism and you should learn to cite accurately and correctly, they do understand that it is quite easy to accidentally plagiarise. They tend to keep the punishment in line with the offence (e.g. buying an assignment is going to be punished way more harshly than an incorrect citation). If you mean well and are careful, there is no reason why you would get into very much trouble.

Also, endnote (citation software) is your citation friend!

How do they use turnitin if you've only submitted your assignment in hard copy and not online?
