2013 and 2014 Biomed Cutoff?

Hi guys,
Does anyone have any idea if the biomedicine atar cutoff will go down (from 99.0 in 2012) in 2013 and 2014?
I know that this years cutoff was extremely high because the government guaranteed seas applicants a place if they got an atar of above 92 - and then 56% of the biomed cohort were seas applicants. Do you think the government will make the atar cutoff higher for seas applicants, so the normal cutoff will be lower for future years?

No one knows. It will depend on the demand of the course in that year.

Sounds like you are talking about the University of Melbourne (UoM). It may be best to direct your inquiry to that board; however, I will give you a terse response:

  • The SEAS cut-off of 92 will most likely be changed and set at a higher ATAR. Allegedly people who got 98s were thrown to the curb on admission selection boards for SEAS applicants scraping into the criteria. A 50%+ below cut-off is a ridiculous percentage. However, arguably, the SEAS applicants that got into the degree deserved the position due to being disadvantaged and so forth.
  • Score a high ATAR and you will be in your biomedicine degree.

I believe that after what happened this year, we are near enough the upper limits of ATAR cut-offs.
Not only for Biomed, but all UoM degrees.

I did some rough numbers (very rough, no SEAS, interstaters etc).
Appox 50,000 complete VCE each Year.
The ATAR is a percentile, therefore ATAR 99 represents top 1% of Year 12s.
1% of 50,000 is 500.
Biomed Intake this Year (411 + 42) = 453
Not far from 500.
Therefore if EVERY SINGLE ONE of the top 500 students in the state chose UoM Biomed we are already down to 99 ATAR
In reality many in the top ranks will choose Science, Arts, Commerce etc (lets face it, we cant all waste our talents on Medicine, someone's got to run the country in the future)

As you can see, we are starting to run out of numbers.
Take out the non-biomed top rankers, add SEAS, interstaters etc and 99 ATAR is already starting to look toppish.
In a nutshell
