Hey guys
So I've picked up 3/4 bio, and our first sac is coming up soon and it's a prac i think,
and i haven't done a prac since like year 9,
so....
any tips? :p
I've got a few notes on how to write up/respond to pracs
but does anyone have any good tips, cause I'll totally be freaking out otherwise...
thankyou
firstly,
no need to stress,!
biol pracs arent hard and unit 3 ones are basically dealing with bacteria and antibiotics
the aim of the experiment is , what you are trying to achieve? what are ur objectives?
hypothesis: your educated guess on what your results may be
materials: usually you can say refer to prac sheet, but if you cant, just list in COLUMNS the materials used.
method: usually you can say refer to prac sheet, but then again, if you have to write it out then list each step,of the procedure
results:
if you have a table, which you most likely will, be sure to title your table!!! otherwise you may lose a mark!
and rule up your table,
if a graph, then label each axes with correct units, a title and appropriate scale
discussion:
this is like where 90% of your sac marks come from. there will be about 10-12 questions which you have to answer. clasically discussion is meant to be a discussion, but teachers will create questions to pretty much include all areas which might be usually covered anyways. this is what you study for.
if required, might wanna discuss why some errors have occured in results,
conclusion -restate aim and state if your aim was achieved or not, and summarise your results.
eg.
prac - effect of antibiotics: you will be using an antibiotic <antibiotic> -sorry , just for your clarification, when i say <antibiotic>, it means its some type of antibiotic, eg. penicllin. you will create a lawn of ecoli on an agar plate and test if antibiotic is effective or not.
aim: to investigate the effect of <antibiotic> on e.coli bacteria and to determine if e.coli is suspectible to <antiobiotic>
hypothesis: ecoli will be suspectible to <antibiotic> and will therefore not be able to reproduce, thus a zone of inhibition will form in agar plates.
materials: refer to prac sheet
OR
2 agar plates ecoli lab glasses
2 sterile swabs antibiotic disk lab coat
incubator gloves etc etc ettc
method.: refer to prac sheet
or..
1. In 1 agar plate, spread ecoli in lawn pattern.. this is your control... etc etc, in 2nd plate, spread ecoli and put antibiotic disk
2. et etc
results:
The effect of <antiobiotic> on ecoli

discussion.
q1) bla bla
q2) bla bla
...etc etc
conclusion:
the effect of <AB> on e.coli was that....
it was observed that a zone of inhibition was formed in the agar plate with the antiiotic, and thus showing that ecoli was suspectible to it.
done
- rough and quick and messy, but thats the general idea.
NOTE
use full names, so no e.coli. make sure you use the full name. so Estheriyayaya coli.
note the use of no caps on coli, since this is convention. Genus species, Homo sapiens,
so not Homo Sapiens, or Esther.... Coli
make sure you use a black or blue pen.some teachers can get picky if u use red pen for headings, and subheadings and for diagrams and stuff. and pencils too.
dont , and DONT use personal pronouns in conclusion, i.e., we found that, i found that, we saw that.
good luck and enjoy your year
