Hey,
I would never of considered ANU until reading this first year guide at B&G: http://bandg.anu.edu.au/attachments/291_First%20Year%20Guide.pdf.
I just have a question about the MBBS. I remember last year of someone mentioning that they could do a 7 year course, with the first 2 years being a PhB (BSc, I can't really remember) but during the last 6 months, of the 2nd year, it is MBBS.
Would anyone be able to tell me what this course was? (If it even exists :S)
Thanks.
In short, yeah it does exist.
I think we also talked about our option of an articulated pathway into graduate medicine at ANU through the PhB. In this pathway, students are exempt from the GAMSAT and are guaranteed a place in the graduate-entry medical program at ANU. They commence the PhB(Hons) degree, undertaking at least some of their research projects in medical research areas but being free to study areas outside science if they would like. There is integration of the PhB science program and the beginning clinical skills program in medicine from the start of 3rd year. Overall, students complete both degrees in seven years rather than the usual eight.

So basically the course is set out like this
Year 1: PhB
Year 2: PhB
Year 3: PhB + MBBS
Year 4: PhB + MBBS
Year 5: MBBS
Year 6: MBBS
Year 7: MBBS
That's my understanding of it anyway. You have to do Advanced Studies courses in medical research (from the PhB). Note that to get into PhB without SEAS or anything you'll want an ATAR of 99+.
Anyway, I was very tempted by this course but I didn't end up taking it because:
- It's a year longer than UQ and UNSW
- You still need to do an interview to gain entry to the MBBS part
- YOU NEED TO MAINTAIN A HD AVERAGE TO GAIN ENTRY TO THE MBBS! (will be a HUGE amount of pressure to maintain that average during 1st and 2nd year uni)
- It's in Canberra
