Medentry

Hey guys,

I've been doing quite a bit of practice on Medentry recently and according to them, I'm almost perfect. I have been getting 98th-100th percentile on Sections 1 and 2 recently and 94th-96th percentile in Section 3.

Although this sounds impressive, I'm very worried about how I will perform in the actual UMAT as Medentry scores are really no accurate indication of how I will go on the day.

I know that Section 2 on Medentry is pretty much completely rubbish as I've found that they seem to ask completely different sorts of questions.

What do you guys think about Medentry and to those of you who got 95th percentile or above, what would be your top 3 tips for doing well on the UMAT?

Thanks :)

Top 3 tips.
1. If you're good at section 2, don't practice. Practice can ruin your instinct.
2. Always complete medentry exams within the time limit.
3. don't. fucking. worry. keeping calm during the exam a necessity.
2010: Chinese SL (36 ---> 45.6), Accounting (48 ---> 48.4)
2011: English (47), Methods (50), Spesh (43 ----> 52.7), Chemistry (48 ----> 49.3), Physics (38)
ATAR: 99.90
2011 UMAT:
S1:[105] S2:[45] S3:[90] Overall:[80] Percentile: 100th

Need chem/methods tutoring?
I'm offering it based predominantly in the south-eastern suburbs (Caulfield-ish) - PM me.

SO YOU'RE THE ONE WHO TOOK THE USERNAME I WANTED!!!!!

Thanks for the tips though, I'll definitely try to enforce them. I just don't feel comfortable not practicing section 2... I feel as though I would benefit if I exposed myself to a wider variety of questions... It doesn't feel right not preparing at all. Thoughts?

I don't suppose it really matters... 105 and 90 on Sections 1 and 3 respectively...
Well I guess we can determine whether your thesis is effective or not by you answering a question. Did you not practice Section 2 because you determined that you were good at it? Don't feel bad about Section 2, you got 100th percentile LOL

Essentially the formula to a good UMAT is two moderately strong sections and one average section, for most people, the strong sections are sections 1 and 3. if you can manage to scratch 75+ on both of them whilst managing to at least hit the magic 50 on section 2, you SHOULD be ok :P

I find that I'm really good at Sections 1 and 2 but very average at Section 3. Are all sections of the UMAT weighted equally for Monash? I know there's one university where Section 3 is oh half as important as Sections 1 and 2, the name escapes me at this moment though.

The uni you're looking for is UWS :P

Anyways, well, you'll need to find your good sections and make sure that they're good.
Also, good is a very non-descriptive term, it can mean very different things to different people - so you'll have to use the percentiles to judge that

Generally, I got 95th-ish percentiles in MedEntry and I got 78 for Section 1 - which is good, but not amazing
I got around 30th percentile in MedEntry and I got 50 for Section 2 - which is acceptable to say the least
For section 3, I got around 96th-97th percentile and I got 90 - which again is good, but not the highest

So with UMAT, you essentially don't have to be the best around to get a good score, you just have to be solid at two sections and reasonable in another.

Hmm I see. Well thanks very much for your insightful knowledge! I'm getting low mid 90th percentiles for Section 3 and close to 100th percentile for Sections 1 and 2 like I said in my original post. Hopefully I can do that well in the real UMAT and I pull a 100th percentile :P

On a slightly irrelevant note, I had parent teacher interviews tonight and they went really well, the parents are very pleased. All of my teachers are expecting me to do very well and my SAC marks have been good so far :D I really want to get into Medicine, more than anything!

1. Do not waste your time by practising for S2, it is nothing, like nothing like the real thing.
2. Try and really utilise the s1 questions, especially the ones that ask "what can be inferred from this passage" or "the choice which most correctly summarises the passage,," etc. Anything one line that asks you something about reading an incredulously long passage also often apperas in the real thing, so it's important to practise not making assumptions in those sorts of questions. Practise them!
3. Establish a pattern, or a way you solve particular quesitons in S3. Once you've established this pattern, and practised it heaps, it's quick, and always works.

I actually improved for Section 2, it might not be like the real thing, but it gives you a taste for what the real thing is like and in some regards it gives you experience (generally) with analysing emotional (instead of analytical) passages.
