MBBS in Manipal University, India

Hey, i recently finished VCE with an ATAR of 95.2 current i am studying BSc at UoM. After my VCE exams i went overseas to India and wrote entrance exam for the top 10 medical colleges in India. I know i will defiantly get accepted into the Manipal University 2nd best in india for Med. I want to know after i complete my MBBS degree in India and i come back to Australia and clear my AMC exam. Can i begin working as a GP straight away or are there other things i must do before i become a GP. What is the complete process for an overseas trained doctor holding a MBBS degree, who is an Australian Citizen to begin working as a GP in Australia?

No you can't start working as a GP straight away, you'll need to do at least 3 years of specialty training

Depending on when you leave India, you will either need to do an internship here, or apply straight away for a PGY2+ position.
You will encounter a challenge in getting those positions, since hospitals prefer Australian grads to some extent and many of the internships prioritize graduates from that state.

What is PGY2? I thought you can begin working as a GP after you clear AMC exam and get through RACGP? Do you happen to know the full process for OTD's?

I'm not doing your research for you, but it is literally all available on the RACGP website with respect to the exact hoops you will need to jump through and the different pathways/assessments etc. that will be required.

However: you will absolutely not be able to graduate from Manipal and being working as a GP straight away, you will need to apply for recognition of your degree etc. etc. and then apply for entry into the RACGP training program etc. etc. The minimum amount of time that will take is 3 years, because that's the minimum length of the GP training pathway. You'll probably also need to do supervised practice and other stuff because you're a overseas trained doctor


PGY2 = Post Graduate Year 2 = 2nd year after leaving med school = resident
