How well do they usually do SS-wise? For example, how many 40+ scores (raw) did the cohort have in previous years? If its ~40%+, its a strong cohort (in my opinion, this is subjective).

The teachers don't seem to like to tell us, but say if the cohort last year had an average SS of 35 and there are 50 in the cohort this year, around what rank would you want to be for a SS of 40?

Rohit is right, look at your school's past performance in the subject, in general, it won't very much.

Just as a general rule, my school this year was 3% for literature %5 for physics 5% for specialist maths 6% for methods 2% for chemistry and this can be considered very very weak.

LOL my school had (roughly) 2% for English Language (50 students total), 0% for HHD (70+ students) and  0% for Legal Studies (~50 students)

Yup check how school went in the past years to get a good idea on how strong your cohort is.. for example the average SS score at my school is 25 I believe and the dux of our school got a 85 last year so I'm clearly in deep shit, also if you are in a shit cohort it makes it harder because you have to be rank 1 (a heavy burden in my case) in order to not be effected by the scaling while students in high achieving schools such MHS can be ranked 15+ and yet still be able to not be effected or effected very little by the scaling process. Also how well your students are doing in their SACs and exam scores can also be a good indication of how strong your cohort is. Try your best, play the VCE game and if you don't get into your preferred course know there are other ways into your preferred pathway.

You can generally guess it just by being in a class with people. Well that's my opinion anyway.

What does it mean to be "Rank 1". Just top the class? I just wanted to know because I'm doing Australian History 3/4 in Year 11 and I don't understand the concept of your class affecting your marks. I topped the class for the first SAC with an A+, but I not sure if I will get scaled down because of the performance of the other people in my class. If you need more info the top study score for the subject was a 35 raw and the class has only 15-20 people.

Rank 1 means having the highest SAC scores within your cohort. People who are Rank 1 don't get effected by scaling.

What do you mean by not effected by the scaling?

They will get th highest exam score which will most likely be there own exam score.. But even if it wasn't they still get th highest exam score of their school as their sac score
