Harvard Style Referencing

Do I need to put Harvard Style Referencing for each sentence that I write?
If I put 3 sentences in a row (as an example) that have come from the same source how can I somehow make it clear that they did come from the same source rather that independently referencing it three times?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this helps but i found this on the unimelb website for harvard style.

Hassan (2004) has argued that ...
OR
... as found in a major study (Hassan 2004).

If the sentences link with each other - you might be able to start or end like this. However, please don't take my word for it, this is just an opinion.

what is the source your using - like a book, article?

This can help:

Website. The problem is that when I'm using a bunch of sentences next to each other sourced from various sources it seems a bit messy with all those references.

I think there's no real rule (that I know of), it just needs to be clear what comes from where.

I was strictly abiding to the Harvard Unimelb Library in text-referencing, but on my finance assignment lost marks because of apparent 'incorrect referencing'. I did the same thing for biology and I think that was accepted. Is there really that much of a difference?

You absolutely can - that is generally far preferred to referencing every single item when it's clear from the context they are all part of the discussion of the one text.

The best test is the one of common sense: a) Would a stranger coming to my essay know exactly which parts are mine and which parts aren't? b) For the parts that aren't mine, would they then know whose they are and where they come from?

Also, if you download EndNote (either install the full version from the library or download the free web 'trial' version) you can put all your sources in there and when you insert references into your Word doc it automatically formats them according to whichever style you use (and you can adjust the details for tutor preferences).

The Finnish word pilkunnussija, which translates literally to “comma fucker,” is someone who risks his social wellbeing to annoyingly and persistently point out punctuation errors.

Completed VCE in 2010 - Now doing BSc at UoM
