Preparation for end of year exams

What's the best way to study for the final exam in terms of hours/content/time period? How did everyone else study in the years before, and how did you go?
I know it's super early to be asking this, but I'm keen!

Haha nice to see you're so keen! ;D I think just going over your notes back to front and really consolidating the information required by the HHD study design is essential (Now and then, it helps to "teach" yourself by verbally reciting your notes to yourself haha although this is weird, I think it's a good way of making things stick! :) ) Also, don't just aim to study the textbook back to front (in fact, use your study design as your guide - no point in putting unecessary information in your notes :) ) - the most crucial thing for exam success is (I know it's cliched) doing questions! :D Haha, do as many past questions as you can find! A lot of people (including myself at the start of last year) make mistakes of writing answers that are too long, too deviated from the question and this often snatches time from completing other questions! Aim to write detailed answers that are at the same time concise (i.e. no fancy introductions or conclusions are needed - you're writing an answer to an short/extended-answer question, not an essay question :) ). Also, avoid using "padding" sentences (sentences with unnecessary or barely related information) just to fill up the lines in the answering space of a question - longer answers only get marks if they incorporate related and detailed information (like examples)!
Best of luck and if you've got any Q's that need answering, get them clarified by your teacher straight away OR even better, just post it on the HHD boards here and I (or any of the other VN'ers who did HHD) can try and help out! :D

Wow, you're keen!

Overall I would say I studied 5-6 hours a week for health, and that's actual study not just homework. Most of those hours were for the current AOS I was studying however I tried to do at least an hour a week of reviewing older concepts. I'd highly recommend that because it saves you heaps of time of revising at the end of the year :) Also try and apply the things you learn to real life.. sounds stupid but even just thinking about what nutrients are in your breakfast and what they're doing to you every morning really works!! You'll be so much more confident with them by the time the exam comes around.

I found just re-reading notes didn't really do the trick for me, so I did heaps of practice questions and made mind-maps and tables :) they're really good if you're a visual thinker. Also because health is so relevant to real life, using pictures as flash cards with information on the back really helped. Especially for nutrients, pictures of the fruits and vegetables as a cue for the nutrient name then it's function on the back.

With your practice questions, make sure you get them corrected and also ask your teacher to cut out any unnecessary stuff so you can start to refine your answers. It's so common for people in HHD to overwrite and include irrelevant information, so try and get on that quickly :)

Also try not to start practice exams too prematurely, I knew of some people who peaked too early and ended up burning themselves out right before the exam.

Sounds like you're a hard-working student so I'm sure you'll go great! Good luck :)
