Electronica - Subgenres

Yo.
I wanted to make this to share with you guys some truly amazing tracks, and moreover, some of the best flipping genre's going around. From Glitch to Lounge to IDM, there's really a lot that many of you have yet to discover (myself included!). So, I wanted to share with you guys some of my favorite picks, and if you guys want more, I'll post more.

There are quite a few music genres out there. To name a few, and really this list is by no means exhaustive, there's Trance, Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Chill, Trip Hop, Funk, IDM, Breaks, Techno, Minimal, Tech House, Microhouse, Hard Trance, Psy Trance, Progressive Trance, House, & Electro. So, because I don't love them all, I'll probably just start (and probably finish off with, depending on how lazy I am) the ones that I'm most fond of.

Those are namely Glitch, Trip Hop, Funk, Chill/Lounge, and a little bit of breaks.

Glitch: These tracks are... unique. Moreso than other genres, they don't follow a beat. Some would say it's a hard genre to dance to, because there is no solid 4/4 kick drum in the bass coordinating moves. Rather, the whole genre is dictated by the subtle swing in just about every sound. It's basically like the song is collapsing upon itself, but in such a profound way that it manages to keep on going. It's by far my favourite genre, and I wanna share some of the best of the best with you.

The Owl and the Penguin by Mind Tree - Current favourite track, discovered it today. Hard to appreciate unless you're a glitch fan already, I think.
Evidence's remix of Sia's Breathe Me - A good introduction to the genre; a simple break beat and glitched out vocals makes it easy to follow and appreciate.
Funk Blaster by Koan Sound - You really can't go wrong unless you hate all electronica, because this is funky as hell. An old time fave.
The Glitch Mob's Palace of the Innocents - Not their most known track, but it really summarises what glitch is. By expansion, all of their stuff is really simple glitch that's still really good quality - kind of like your deadmau5 of the progressive house world.
>> Check out all of The Glitch Mob because if they can't sell it to you, no one can.
Acid Wolfpack by Coyote Kisses is just crazy. Check it out.

I'll move on.

Trip Hop: This genre is like a grungy, dark, and evocative version of hip hop. I think anyone can appreciate this - it's like listening to the stereotypical 'sad song', but it's not as you know it. Do you like the House MD theme? That's Trip Hop.

House MD theme, otherwise known as Teardrop by Massive Attack - always a stunner
Paradise Circus by Massive Attack - Massive attack just owns this genre. They do it so well. Kinda glitchy and spacy, great vocals.
Roads by Portishead LIVE PERFORMANCE - this is a thrilling piece of music, and it shows just how down to earth it is. Portishead pretty much invented Trip Hop.
Dayvan Cowby by Boards of Canada - This is more IDM than trip hop, but still a great example

Now, my problem herein lies in differentiating trip hop from chill. I guess there are different kinds of chill. A lot of different kinds of chill. But it all really falls under the same category. Feel free to debate if you're in the know, but I would split chill up into a few different classifications - IDM, downtempo, upbeat, and lounge. I have stacks and STACKS of Chill tracks of all different sorts. It makes a friggin fantastic genre to study to as background music, and just to have going with guests over. It sets the mood right.

Lounge Chill:

Breathe by Telepopmusik
Hatoa by Bonobo bonus points for figuring out the time signature even if you're not a music head. It's not 4/4. Count the beats in each cycle, and bask in it's glory.
Stay the Same by Bonobo

Downtempo Chill:
Porcelain by Moby an old school classic. Moby STILL managed to headline at Summadayze this year after an amazing career. Heads up - this guy created the Bourne Identity theme song, legit.
Destiny by Zero 7 A beautiful track with a great film clip
Freddie Joachim's Splendour I dunno. This is funky. So it belongs in IDM.

IDM Chill:

Lounge Chill:
Anything by Armada Lounge

I'll fill in the rest later. I'm too lazy to do this now. But let me know if you like what you hear!!

Oh man. Epic list.

Please add psychedelic trance. <3

I don't listen to many sub-genres other than trance/prog.trance/prog.house, but I do occasionally stumble upon gems that go into my 'chill' playlist. I would classify most of these as 'Ambient House', these tracks have very rhythmic and simple beat structures, though some have trance elements, while others are closer to deep house.

Ambient House / Ambient Trance
Arty - Sunset (Original Mix)
Dakota - Gypsy Room
Soundprank - Beginnings
Soundprank - Timespan

Ambient House / Deep House
Dusky - Lost In You (Original Mix)
Gui Boratto - No Turning Back (David Tort The Mansion Remix)

Ambient / Breakbeat
Ludique - On The 9th Day

Chillstep
Blackmill ft. Veela - Let It Be

Will be expanding this as I go.

Good thread

Been listening to some Future Garage lately which is, as far as I'm concerned, the best stuff coming out at the moment.

Trip hop for me differs from Downtempo in that it has that noir sound to it whereas Downtempo is still rooted in dance music. And if you go on from there, you'd be able to point out other differences but no, they aren't mutually exclusive.

Also, Hatao is 3/4 for the first two and 4/4 for the next two

It's really not that hard to quantify..., but I believe that being raped once is not as bad as being raped five times, even if the one rape was by a gang of people.

It's up there. I just haven't added any tracks yet. Link some good tracks and I'll put em up.

I'll work on this later tonight, but I'm probably going to progress in the order of stuff that I like. So I'll be upping many more glitch tracks.

Edit: Ooh, the man above me knows schpongle! Thoroughly impressed :P

Oh man, this guy has some serious hate for trance. "Trance is dead. Ferry Corsten killed it." xD

Anyhow, this is really well made. I wonder if there is anything like it with the last 10 years of development. Things like Dubstep, cheesy vocal trance, pop/house infusion, 'hard' house (from Ferry Corsten/Tiesto/the like), wobblestep, all the good new genres... <.<

Yeah, he hates the uplifting trance sorta styles. He said Psytrance was the only subgenre with integrity left, or something to that effect. haha

Trance isn't where it's at guys! Get around glitch, best thing going around atm.

Mao, do you go to any bush doofs? It's basically all just psy trance with an occasional set of glitch.
Surely you've been to Rainbow Serpent Festival - it's like the staple of psy trance events and it's pretty big considering (it gets like 10k ppl per year, as opposed to Summadayze which is around 20k or other big festivals which hit around the 20k mark)

Don't know where to start...

Autechre
Brian Eno
Aphex Twin
Future Sounds of London
Apparat
Modeselektor
Plaid
Hecq
Shpongle
Oliver Lieb

etc. etc. etc...

Oh right, may as well contribute a track, something old but good... just rediscovered it now when looking back at old music: http://soundcloud.com/spenza/spenza-dia

Lol no it's not, from memory (without listening to it now) the time signature is like 7/8 or 14/8. 7/8 works but it's in a two-bar continuum.
