Bail is the release (with conditions) into the community before the conclusion of trial; the surety is the 'guarantee' that you will appear for trial - for example, the person who puts up a bond they will have to forfeit if you abscond, such as Mokbel's sister-in-law giving her house as surety that he would appear for trial (ha ha ha).
[Update: full for 2018.] I give Legal lectures through CPAP, and am an author for the CPAP 'Legal Fundamentals' textbook and the Legal 3/4 Study Guide.
