Could someone explain how the 3-2 rule works for pick the middle questions :S?

Basically if the 3 patterns have 1 thing in common and another 2 has 1 thing in common, the group of 3 has to take position 1 OR 3 OR 5, then the group of 2 has to take position 2 OR 4. The answer must be 1 of the group of 3.

Normally it works with alternating patterns, i.e black-grey-black-grey-black or dot at topright-bottomleft-topright-bottomleft-topright
