Equivalent of UoM's BBiomed?

Are there any equivalent degrees offered by other universities in Victoria? I'm not allowed to move interstate for medicine and I think my chances at Monash's MBBS will be slim, so I'm looking around for degrees to fall back on in case I miss out.

Biomedical Science at Monash, Deakin, La Trobe, Science at UoM, Monash, Deakin, Swinburne, La Trobe...would you like me to keep going? I think you get the point

I didn't mean general Science. I meant more like Biomedical Science. So there's courses at Monash, Deakin and La Trobe? Sweet. :)

You might want to consider doing these as an alternative to Biomedicine at UoM if you get over 99.

There's little difference between BioMed and Science anyway - what major were you looking into?

If you're keen on the UoM Biomed course but worried you won't get the score required, just know that one of my friends transferred across from Monash Biomed after her first year despite getting an ATAR of about 94 and kept most/all of her credits.

What do you want out of the degree, because Biomedical Science differs from Biomedicine on a couple of relatively large points.
Monash (I've been told via word of mouth) is rather focused on research and building your ability to do that, which isn't really the focus of the UoM Biomedicine degree.

I'd consider a Bachelor of Science at either Melb or Monash. Despite what the glossy university pamphlets tell you, there is no tangible benefit or advantage to doing biomed specifically for grad med admission - you are far better off doing a degree which has the most flexibility and allows you to complete the prerequisites.

Biomed degrees do not confer any advantage for GAMSAT or the admissions process and are always far more restrictive and limited. You want to be able to choose the subjects that will give you the highest GPA, prerequisites and a basic science background for GAMSAT - and the truth is there are many degrees that will allow you to do this to a high standard.

The supremacy of biomed for med/dent/allied health admissions is a myth.

You might want to consider doing these as an alternative to Biomedicine at UoM if you get over 99.

This is a good recommendation. This program is even more flexible and useful - good mentoring program and opportunities for networking and industry experience.

I also noticed Monash offers a Bachelor of Biomedical Science/Bachelor of Science double degree. Yay or nay?

"nay"

There is way too much overlap and you'll probs be forced to do units you're not interested in just to get both degrees.

Personally, my back-up was BiomedSci/Engi(chemical) @ Monash (clayton). Why? Because if I was unable to get into grad med somewhere, I would still have a degree that would get me a job that I'd enjoy (ie. the engineering part). Personally, I'm not too keen on research for the rest of my life, so Biomed or Science by themselves wouldn't be too nice.

My other thought was doing Sci @ UoM and then if I didn't get into grad med I'd do a Master of Engineering :)

To sum up, good to have back-up options, but good to also realise where those options will leave you if things don't go your way.

IMO, nay, as per VegemitePi. It lacks flexibility and doesn't give you anything a standard science degree can.

The exception would be if you had a specific career pathway in mind that would benefit from the double-degree - for instance one student I knew was doing BBiomed/BSci(Physics) in order to qualify for the 5-year medical physicist training program.

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!

What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.
