BLAW10001 (Principles of Business Law) lectures useful?

I've recently got offered a job, which together with my timetable and club commitments, means I cannot attend any of the PBL lectures. If you've done this subject before, do you think they are vital? I've got the textbook and CD for it but this subject has no recordings. Will I miss out on a lot?

If they are really important, I guess I could try and rearrange my timetable I guess (cept that would mean getting home at 8PM which is not cool)

Yep, any law subjects are generally very anecdota;  Since common law relies on precedents set (decisions/rulings set bu the courts) from old cases ( ie. donoghue vs stevenson in the law of torts and negligence). You will be spending 3 times the effort in reading and understanding the precedent (ie reason behind the courts decisions) than what you can gather in one lecture. You picked the worst lecture to skip lol.

Skipping PBL lectures is not the smartest thing to do but if you put some hard work into it then it's doable.
Most of the info in the lecture slides are enough to explain the basic concepts to you. You then go on to do the computer tutorials
many time to make sure you got things down to pat.

I didn't do very much note taking in the lectures themselves but with case-studies at the end of the lectures, it does help to consolidate and put
the material in that lecture into practice.

As for cases, all the case summaries that you need are in the back of the source book along with the list of cases you need to know that
are given to you in the supplementary materials. Given it's just case summaries, it's not too hard to remember all of the ones you need. Especially since you have a test every few weeks which gets you started on the cases already.

I, personally, do not believe the lectures are entirely important as much of the information is simply read from the slides themselves. This is just a reflection of last semester so it may not be representative of the semester that you are undertaking this subject in. Simply reading the lecture slides, alongside reading the relevant chapter in your textbook and completing the electronic tutorials until you fully understand the legal concepts, in my opinion, is enough. Also, if you completed legal studies in VCE, by all means, do not worry too much about the first few weeks of lectures as they are a basically Legal Studies 101.

Although it may differ from person to person, I did not attend the last few weeks of lectures at all and learnt from the electronic tutorials and the source book quite efficiently, scoring a final H1 grade. If you have a decent memory, I think you should be fine, so long as you are willing to work.

Okay, thanks guys. (and no unfortunately I didn't do legal in VCE )

I guess I'll have to try and do something about it. I've already skipped the first lecture though x.x
Thought it wouldn't be TOO bad since most of the commerce lectures aren't that useful but I guess I was wrong :)

Thanks for the feedback

Lectures not important at all. It's pretty much a repeat of what's in your subject reader (each lecture = each chapter of the reader). Honestly if you have the old guy, you might as well be sleeping in bed still.

What are really important are the comp-based tutorials (repetition of them is the best practice for skills tasks/exam) and remembering the cases from the subject reader and you're set for PBL!

Just a footnote, if you are planning continuing to further study in the law subjects offered (eg, Corporate Law) - ie. because you are completing an Accountancy Major (like me). Then I would strongly advise you to make a habit of going to law lectures as Corporate Law is a subject where attendance at lectures is essential to do well in the exam (which is worth 85% (if you do the optional assignment) or 100% of total marks (this year at least)).

The lecturer could quite be the most boring man on earth.
Just read the slides.
