I'll probably get mine early next term then. A distinction might be nice, since I've never gotten higher than credit. Doubt it though. :P

How do you guys get good at it?
I'm only ever confident in at max 15 questions. (obviously not including the last 5)
Every time I do it, it makes me sad LOL

The trick is getting through the first 20 ASAP, then the next few is a bit of luck. There's no single strategy to it, but you've got to think out of the box. Usually if you are getting 2+ of the last five, you'll be in line for a Prize :)

Thank god I'm not the only one who looked at it and thought 'what the actual ....'. The best I've ever managed was top 5% but that was a while ago. This time though, I don't even think there's a chance I'll get 15/30.

But how do you even manage to get through the first 20? What is the required level of mathematical knowledge?

Well, when I did it, I got 3 Prizes and a HD and I was doing maths at my year-level standard. It's not about knowing complex maths, just thinking out of the box.

I think the question is, how can you increase your ability to think outside the box, because I have a tendency to fail at doing that.

Not sure, I guess I was lucky to have a few awesome teachers in yr7-8 who have me a good standard in this regard (thanks to UHS btw). You can always do prac questions from previous years to pick up techniques (I'll admit to doing maybe 6 papers in total).

Also, when I was invite to the Tournament of Towns I picked up a few things from some of the more genius people haha, so that helped too :)

Any tips you'd be willing to share or practice papers you can link me to?

Well, tips are hard, really depends on the question. I liked to draw a lot of tables, draw my own diagrams, play around with the algebra, and trial-and error is a great tool especially in the MCQs. A lot of the last 5 comes down to luck, and I think once I got 3 correct, but the other times I got 0-2 from memory.

I think there was a link to heaps of them on here once, not sure about now, try digging around the Maths threads haha.
