Confusion

So as year twelve progresses and we slowly but surely approach the day that we need to decide what tertiary education to enrol in for next year, I'm becoming more and more confused about what I want to do, as opposed to becoming more sure.

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a doctor. However in recent times, I'm not so sure anymore.

Law has always been my second preference and now that I've been thinking, it may be my first preference, it may even end up not being one of my preferences.

I'm now interested in Medicine, Dentistry, Law and Commerce (Investment banking in particular). I have no idea which order I'll put them in though.

I have no idea how I'm going to make this decision as so much rests on it and I don't think it's something I can or should leave to the last minute.

Anyone who is now in university have any stories they can share about their ambivalence and how they finally made a decision?

I'm not particularly concerned about the pay, I just want to do something that I will enjoy and can see myself doing for an extended period of time. Something along the lines of, "do a job you love and you won't have to work a day in your life". Only problem is being a doctor, dentist, barrister, investment banker etc are all so damn appealing to me and I would love to do them all.

*sigh*

Do Commerce at Melbourne and then either proceed straight into the work force, do some form of post-grad finance course or apply for the JD?

That eliminates medicine and dentistry... :( I have considered that though.

Not too sure but there's a possibility that you could remain eligible by doing electives which are pre-reqs for med/dent. Alternatively do commerce/science at Monash but that would take you a bit longer (not sure exactly how much).

Keep all the options open until you decide: Comm/Sci at Monash.

I know a few kids who got into melb med with a commerce degree. Just have to pick your breadths and electives carefully. Plus the gamsat would be a b!tch for non science based degree graduates.

Not sure what to do yet but I'll write out the scenarios I've considered this far.

1) Undergraduate medicine
2) Undergraduate medicine
3) Science or Biomedicine -> Medicine or Dentistry
4) Commerce -> JD/MBA
5) Commerce -> Masters -> PhD or hopefully a job in investment banking
6) Commerce/Biomedical science double degree -> JD or Medicine or Dentistry

They're the main ones.

Maybe base the rankings on what you think will be the hardest to get into (if you are really stuck on which one to choose).
Then if it turns out you get the first preference, it would probably be easier to switch into one with a lower ATAR (etc.) requirement rather than the other way round if you wanted???

Btw, you don't actually like any of these careers. You like the romantic notion of what these careers mean. And i can tell you now you will be in for a nasty shock if you choose to do something based on its percieved stature: every commerce student and his dog wants to do ib - same with medicine and law. Only a few are willing to put in the work (and it is a LOT of work) to achieve those goals.

6) Commerce/Biomedical science double degree > JD or Medicine or Dentistry
Wouldn't this or Comm/Sci like Vegit mentioned be the most ideal if you wanted to keep your options open? I think you could also have your option 4 and 5 still open here too, and go onto do a masters or MBA after your Comm/Biomed double degree?

You're interested in doing JD or Medicine, so I assume you're okay with committing to a pretty long slog of study. If you lose the interest in one of the commerce or medicine in the first couple of years of your double degree, you could always drop one of them too and switch to one of the single degrees?

Seems logical. May resort to this if the need arises :) Thank you.

You're probably right. I couldn't give a rats about stature though, I want to do a job that interests me. I've found that interest in the areas I've mentioned.

Yeah it looks like Comm/Biomed is the best option at this stage. If I make my mind up before everything is finalised, I'll just change it :)

Why Biomed over Science?

It seems like a better option considering I'm interested in Medicine/Dentistry. Subjects may be the same, I don't know.
