Comm at Melb or Comm/law Monash?

For my preferences after medicine i will have either comm at melb or comm/law at monash immediately following medicine preferences.
But I'm not sure which one i wan't to put ahead of the other.
What advantages does having a law degree as well as a commerce degree give over just a single commerce degree in terms of
Job prospects, range of job opportunities?
How much more work does it involve?

Thanks :)

From what I've gathered from other people, your choice comes down to opportunity cost. If you choose Commerce at Melbourne that's 3 years at uni as opposed to 5 years at uni with a Comm/Law degree at Monash.

If you're willing to sacrifice 2 years in the work force to finish off your law degree, then you may become more attractive to employers and have good job prospects, however, that being said, you need to maintain a high WAM for this to hold true. On the other hand, if you choose Commerce at Melbourne, then you'll have 2 of experience, have an income before those Comm/Law kids (assuming FT study), and perhaps be more appealing to employers.

The law degree is becoming a generic degree, if it isn't already. Many people do law simply because the degree is regarded prestigious. Don't let this be the reason why you're choosing Law.

If you do choose to do Law, for the right reasons, on top of a Commerce degree, it'll open a lot of doors to different careers as opposed to just a Commerce degree. Chinese whispers: employers like those who have a law degree because of all the skills that you acquire throughout the course, as well as hinting to them that you can handle huge amounts of work, and therefore might consider you over someone who has only a Commerce degree.

In my opinion, everyone is hopping on the Commerce bandwagon and I think in order to separate yourself from the millions, or even perhaps billions of kids who do Commerce, then you should do something different. Either add on an honours later after your Commerce at Melbourne, or do a joint degree with Law as this will allow you to advance so much further in the commercial world.

P.S. You'll get into med. I'm sure of it. :)

What passion do you have for Law?

I know a few guys who did exactly what you did, they didn't want to "waste" their 98+ ATAR so they decided to do Comm/Law. A few of them really hate it now, it's not really anything like Suits or the like.

Thanks for your help detailed response MKWB!

And no, Paul, I am not a "law or medicine person." I am a person who really wants to do medicine, but must submit other preferences in case I don't get in, of which my most favored ATM are law and law / comm (currently monash unbonded - chancellors - monash bonded (pending discussion with parents) - law / comm monash - comm melb - biomed melb)

Vege
I don't really have a passion for law, but having said that, i don't really have a passion for commerce either. My passion lies in pursuing medicine currently. But apart from medicine i don't really have a career i desperately want to do. I don't know that much about law / commerce so i'm not that informed on my decision (trying to become a bit more), it's mainly the career opportunities it could open that will determine whether the extra work of law is worth it. However i've never watched Suits so that won't be a problem :D. I did my work experience placement in a solicitors office (as my mum is a doctor and i needed more info about law, not medicine) and admittedly i didn't really like it. Seemed boring and repetitive. However no job is perfect and i won't be doing a single law degree, so it's more comparing the career possibilities of law /comm as opposed to comm

Alternatively, i could place Biomedicine above Law / comm, but i'm really, really not too keen on studying my a** off for another 3 years and still potentially not getting into medicine.

I laugh every time people discuss Suits when thinking about law. Completely agree with Vege, Suits is completely fictitious in almost every way.

A comm/law degree does open a lot more options compared to straight commerce. If you're unsure, it might be worth thinking about.
I really want to work in the commercial industry, and am using my law degree purely to complement my commerce studies. However, I am enjoying law much, much more than commerce. It's quite challenging but immensely rewarding.

Bear in mind, that your marks will be significantly lower in Comm/law as opposed to straight commerce (though employers take this into account). I had difficultly at first getting used to receiving "low" marks.

About the two extra years:
It's not really that much of a sacrifice. Obviously, you're prepared to do med, which is 5 years anyways. I'm planning on deferring my final two years to seek employment, and maybe finish of my law degree over a few years (studying part time).

How would you know if you like it or not if you haven't tried? :P

You don't necessarily have to try everything in life to decide if it's suitable for you or not. You might not gain the personal experience to say "I tried this and it doesn't suit me", but that's not always necessary. There's other ways you can educate yourself on what it would entail.

To decide to try something in the first place, you'll need some kind of motivation to do it anyway.

Since you don't have a strong passion for either the finance sector or law sector, perhaps Commerce at Melbourne would be a great choice. That way, if you decide to go into law, you can apply to practically any good law school for a JD or even a JD/MBA or JD/JD.

If you decide to go into the finance sector, you could get a job after your 3 year degree or pursue further related study.
Aspiring doctor. Why? For the same four reasons as everybody else. Chicks, money, power and chicks.

Well, I'd say that if one enjoys doing UMAT questions, then they probably shouldn't be doing med. Those sort of questions shouldn't be "fun" :P

You'll get into Medicine, but based on your interests (and keenness for medicine) why not biomed/science?

their good expect for section 2. Also does anyone know if you can still do research with a MBBS degree because that is an avenue I might take.
