From what I've gathered from other people, your choice comes down to opportunity cost. If you choose Commerce at Melbourne that's 3 years at uni as opposed to 5 years at uni with a Comm/Law degree at Monash.
If you're willing to sacrifice 2 years in the work force to finish off your law degree, then you may become more attractive to employers and have good job prospects, however, that being said, you need to maintain a high WAM for this to hold true. On the other hand, if you choose Commerce at Melbourne, then you'll have 2 of experience, have an income before those Comm/Law kids (assuming FT study), and perhaps be more appealing to employers.
The law degree is becoming a generic degree, if it isn't already. Many people do law simply because the degree is regarded prestigious. Don't let this be the reason why you're choosing Law.
If you do choose to do Law, for the right reasons, on top of a Commerce degree, it'll open a lot of doors to different careers as opposed to just a Commerce degree. Chinese whispers: employers like those who have a law degree because of all the skills that you acquire throughout the course, as well as hinting to them that you can handle huge amounts of work, and therefore might consider you over someone who has only a Commerce degree.
In my opinion, everyone is hopping on the Commerce bandwagon and I think in order to separate yourself from the millions, or even perhaps billions of kids who do Commerce, then you should do something different. Either add on an honours later after your Commerce at Melbourne, or do a joint degree with Law as this will allow you to advance so much further in the commercial world.
P.S. You'll get into med. I'm sure of it.
