I'm doing Esl this year, I find note form summary extremely difficult. I can never find the rule that when I should simplify, when I should make it up, when I should include the example-persuasive technique. My teacher comments my summary is always vague, how to do it?
And for text response, is TEEL and introduction-three main points-conclusion the only way to do it?
If I'm going to write an imaginative story in Section B, how can I put GUAIA into it?It always seems to be abrupt.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you:)

For the note form summary, just ensure that you do not use complete sentences but rather dot points. Use a lot of boxes, arrows, symbols and numbering to make your points clear. Outline the issue, the arguments, dot point some things under the arguments, then write some notes on the solution/action to be taken. For the analysis of 3 arguments, choose your 3 arguments and then 2 to 3 techniques that support each argument - use the technique-example-purpose-effect structure.

For text response, yes that is the standard essay structure, there are slight variations to this but that is the main one.

For your creative piece, do not explicitly say anything like 'One day, I picked up Growing Up Asian' or 'In Alice Pung's stories, it is shown...' - basically do not mention the stories unless you can find a really, really clever way of making it sound good and not superficial or cheesy. Otherwise, focus on drawing out some of the ideas in the stories or do something different like taking on someone's persona in a story, writing the '1 year later' to a story etc.

Hi, I normally write expository for context essay but I wanna try imaginative form (create a story or whatever) to see which one is better
I just wonder how you relate the imaginative form with the text (GUAIA)? Is it like we link the ideas in the book with the characters and plots in our stories?
Thanks in advance!

Ask yourself what does it mean to be human and give two points about that, and then for a however paragraph, you could argue that yes, in some ways, the stories ARE about India.

Sorry, I won't be handing out essays for you to memorise.

This quote is basically exploring the cultural differences and difficulties that Simon experienced in terms of trying to 'fit in' - wasn't able to speak clearly, hear the sounds of the world around him clearly, or read clearly. In his cultural journey he was essentially stripped of all those crucial elements that would otherwise allow him to forge a connection with the world - they are the quintessential parts of a cultural identity that were non existent for the writer.

Discuss around 2 to 3 depending on your structure/approach, and study around 5 to 6 that cover a range of themes/ideas.

Hey werdna! :)

This is just for the context piece.

My question is, Are we allowed to use song lyrics to provide 'support' to our argument?

(This is for Identity and Belonging)

Hey Mr Study! Thanks for your question - song lyrics are definitely OK to use in your exam. I would highly recommend songs (and films) because they are a LOT easier to remember in exam conditions.

When you use a song in your essay, make sure you name the song and the artist, and most importantly, use quotes from the song lyrics and analyse them in relation to the topic. Also when you quote the lyrics, capitalise the start of each line and put a bracket at the end of each line: "....Line 1..../....Line 2....'

Good luck!
