Psychiatry, in my opinion, is absolutely astonishing. Love reading about it.

Also love reading what serial killers/mass murderers have to say about their crimes, and gain an insight to their thoughts.

Are there any of these facilities open to the public in Melbourne?

I understand, it's a little insensitive to speak about this or go to see them as if they are a circus show, but I honestly think it would be an amazing experience.

Have you read The Scarecrow by Micheal Connelly? Freaked the hell out of me, but I think you will enjoy it.
I'm not sure, but I do not think so.
I shall not project my own opinion, but these things do require a cerain degree of tactfulness (in speaking about them) and sensitivity.

I haven't, is it fiction or non-fiction? I prefer writings written by the criminals themselves. Have you read Anders Breivik's book about his views and why he was planning on doing what he did? I found the link to it on the deepweb a while back and it was a great read (very long though). I definitely agree about the tactfullness and sensitivity.

Mhmmmm. I agree in terms of interest. I do find looking into the motives behind murderous acts interesting as I love to know what causes people to think, feel and behave in certain ways.

I read autobiography of a girl that was kidnapped for 8 years (more or less) and it was interesting, in a sick kind of way, listening to her describe her kidnapper and her thought processes as she questions him and his motives.

Most of them were closed down quite a while ago. The conditions were more or less just inhumane. The closest you'll get to an 'asylum' is Thomas Embling Hospital I think, which is essentially a forensic psychiatry hospital. I doubt any of these sorts of facilities will be open to the public though. If you like the idea of a mental asylum though, you could always check out La Rundel mental asylum in Bundoora. It's been shut down for a while, but people still trespass there all the time since it's scary as hell. Makes for a good date  ;) But yeh, alternatively you can just get into Med and wait for your psychiatry rotation. I just finished my psych rotation about 2 weeks ago and I encountered quite a range of stuff in the general psychiatry ward.

Thanks for your reply! I have actually been to La Rundel, and it definitely made for an interesting experience. I almost crapped myself when I walked into some other guy lol. Turns out, him and his friend were exploring the place too. Don't know if I'd go again though, apparently there's asbestos and it's illegal.

AFAIK most of his "book" was actually plagiarised verbatim from other sources.

There was an old one in bundoora (I think near RMIT there) but I think it's either been knocked down or converted.

That's La Rundel. It's not in use anymore, it still exists though. Heaps of people sneak in to check it out, as I said below.
