i notice that adelaide gives out actual places based on umat and interview (both equally weighted). does that mean if my umat is mediocre, I dont have much of a chance even if i do well on the interview? (dentistry)
If i remember it right, UOA will divide candidates into several quartile groups (i think it is 4) according to their interview result and then rank you using your umat. Say there are 400 kids who did the interview. The first quartile group (1-80 candidates), who did amazingly well in their interview, will definitely get a place no matter how low their umat was (of course it will still be above the cut off). The next quartile group (81-160) are slightly different because not all of them will end up getting in. So if you are in this second group, you will be ranked according to your UMAT result. If you are the highest in this group, you will be the 81st candidate and you will be in. UOA gives offers to student up to around 105+/-5 (depends on how many people reject their offers).
Now as you can see, if you are in the third or fourth quartile group (meaning you didn't do well in the interview), no matter how well you went for your UMAT, they won't care.
*This is just my understanding of how the system works. I got a place from them last year
