Hope for medicine gone?

Hey,

So umat results came out today and I did really bad, like worse than I was expecting.

As a result, any interviews wont be offered from unversities in the country.

I was wondering, if I scored so low on the umat if I should even bother trying to do achieve medicine?

What is the prospects of doing post grad? How is the GAMSAT? Is it all academic??

sorry if I sound pessismistic, its really tough for me since I studied so much for this umat....

There's still JCU and Griffith!

Yeah, pi's right, both JCU and Griffith look at ATAR only.

On top of that you still have UoM, where you can get a guaranteed place into the MD with an ATAR of 99.90+.

And then there's also graduate medicine, there are three universities in Victoria which have graduate courses, UoM, Monash and Deakin. Out of those, UoM is the hardest to get into, but I know that it is quite a fair bit easier to get Monash or Deakin (as they are not metro based).

That regardless, the GAMSAT is partially academic, there's a section on Humanities and Logical Reasoning (comparable to S1 of the UMAT). There's essays and then there's a Science component. Note that this format may or may not benefit you - but in the end, those who work hard and persevere will be rewarded.

If i cant get into them, do you think its worth sitting the GAMSAT??

Why would you NOT want to sit the GAMSAT? If you want to do medicine, I think it's a good opportunity.

GAMSAT is different to UMAT from what i've heard, i.e less based off raw talent, so yes.

UMAT is hard to study for in the traditional sense, don't beat yourself up over it.
if you can study just as hard for VCE, you'll do well

advice: Have a cry and move on to vce

Much more so than the UMAT but fundamentally its still assessing your ability to reason and section 1 in particular isn't based on material you can "study"

Well you do have a while until you'll have to start thinking about the GAMSAT, but there's no use saying you're bad at something before even attempting it :P

Just a random question.. Do you have to do pre-requisite courses to get into post-grad med? eg. If I finished my dent course and then wanted to do the GAMSAT and get into med (not that I would want to), would I be able to get in even though I didnt exactly do a Biomedicine or Science course (or equivalent subjects?)

What's interesting is that there is a special scheme for *some* dent students so that when they finish their degree, they can join the Monash MBBS as a 3rd year.

Downside is that they have to pass all the 2nd year exams (which isn't easy as there is a VIA) and the 2nd year OSCE.

You probably won't find this info online as it's not really advertised :P

Yeah, it's strange, they have to just pass all the exams.

I only found out about it when a couple of dentists (fully trained) were in my clinical skills tute the other day learning how to take neurological exams of the lower limb, and I had a quick chat with them about it.

Well, the exam in the second year of key importance (the "VIA"), incorporates all of first and second year knowledge.

All of the topics are in the assessment guide, but it's a hell of a lot haha
