According to a handout issued at a recent seminar, signs of homosexuality in boys may include preferences for tight, light colored clothes and large handbags, local media reported.

This is really dumbed-down homophobia - don't they know that 'light coloured clothes" are out of fashion this summer..? It's all about the pastels this season. And as for large handbags - thank goodness small clutch purses are not targeted! Would hate to be whisked off to de-gaying concentration camp before getting to showcase the new Chanel!

But seriously... What f***wits.

Last year, despite widespread criticism, the east coast state of Terengganu set up a camp for "effeminate" boys to show them how to become men.

Well that's an effective way to make said "effeminate boys" emotionally disturbed, marginalised, insecure, narcissistic and possibly violent.

Religion is not the only thing at play here. The disparate pseudo-fundamentalist Christian movement in the US has well-entrenched, blatantly public anti-gay discourse, but unlike Malaysia etc they have to temper it with rhetorical statements like "we are pro-family and love the sinner, but hate the sin" etc, despite being entitled to a degree of free speech. I think the reason even US crackpots word their homophobic rants more shrewdly is because most of them actually know way too many functional, healthy, accomplished gay people in positions of respect and power. Thus the stereotype of the hypereffeminate deviant lurking in a dungeon, converting children to "unhealthy lifestyles" is demonstrably false.

In countries like Malaysia where homosexuality is taboo and underground, the homosexual is almost a mythical monster. The Malaysian government and their moronic think-tanks have no idea that they sound stupid, because in their narrow minds homosexuals could NEVER be confused with "normal" people.

Good case study for elswhere in the world *cough*Australia*cough* that demonstrates the importance of removing laws, policies and procedures that construct homosexuality as a pathological condition - it simply fuels misconceptions that lead to people having narrow, misinformed preconceptions. Makes it really hard to break the moron cycle of anti-gay sentiment.

Ironic considering their prevalent alternate gender grouping of waria, who are men who have sex with men but don't identify as men, thus justifying their homosexuality as heterosexuality (if this sentence confuses you, dw).

e, they're known as something else in Malaysia, 'mak nyah' apparently

It's an interesting topic, I did some research on it as part of an HIV project
