ATAR Notes Solution Videos

Hey guys, I whipped up the following 3 videos to guinea pig an idea I had for ATAR Notes to make video solutions to every single past VCAA problem.

Disregarding the crude production quality (which will improve if we went ahead with this)

Of the first 3 videos, tell me which style you liked the best:

Video 1 (explanation first, then model solution at the end) - Also the first minute of this one is quite rambly. I was nervous :(
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHf5qGvyETw

Video 2 (model solution first, small explanation at the end)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seOdb0LCE8A

Video 3 (Constantly intertwining explanation with model solution)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uuB9bIuAIg

Let me know any thoughts or suggestions you might have. The most important question to answer, however, is would you use these videos?

They'd be completely free, but ad supported through YouTube's partner program.

This is fantastic, would definitely use them for more difficult problems. Only criticism I have is that waiting for the written part of the explanation if painstakingly long, although I realise that's the nature of screen capturing and writing using a mouse pen.

I'm not a fan of video 2, I like the idea of explanation parts being the focus. If I wanted quick model solutions, I doubt I'd go look for a video - I'd just load up the assessor report or iTute solutions.

Whether I like the idea of video 1 or video 3 better though, I can't decide. The longer explanation of video 1 was neat, going through and explaining the chain rule etc. That'd be the kind of stuff I'd be looking for at the start of the year, learning the concepts in the first place.

Video 3 was pretty compact, if I was stuck on a particular question during exam prep and went to go look up help, I might prefer the style of this video.

Oh and also, for Exam 2 questions, showing how to use the CAS (and any neat tricks for that particular question) I reckon would be pretty handy. I'm not sure how you would go about that though (with different CAS's being used etc.). I guess something similar to what KhanAcademy does with calculators, using the software.

I liked the form of video 3 best (video 2 is about as good though I like the intertwining more). I didn't think the lengthy explanation of the chain rule in video was entirely necessary. I think it might be a good idea to just make a separate video for differentiation rules (and other rules, for other topics), to avoid repetition. If you do that then you can just refer to them in the solution videos; for example in the first video you could say something like "see our video on the chain rule for more detailed explanation." This makes the solution videos more about the specific question, which I'd say is the main reason people would watch them.

Fantastic idea, and I tend to agree that video 3 was the best. Given that you're going over exam questions, and by nature they're done at the end of the year, you should assume that students would know how the chain rule etc. works. And again, the interweaving of explanation helps to cover any basic theory as you're going through it. I'd probably restrict it to the tougher analysis questions, or the questions which students tended to do badly on, based on assessment reports. It seems fairly redundant and time consuming to go through every single question in the exam.

I thought video 1 was good for mathematical explanations, this could help with those who struggle a bit more with math.

Video 3 was good for the standard methods student.

Maybe incorporate two into one video if possible?

Khan Academy styled videos.. I like (Y)
But now let's get down to the chase.

Video 1 was more suited for people who struggle for maths and/or rather students who are actually learning the content. I felt it was more of a learning sort of video rather than a video explaining the solution since I managed to (kinda) learn how to differentiate T_T

My feelings about Video 3 was that you should have a basic idea of what you need to do and the only reason you would view this video is because you're so close to the solution but you're essentially 'forgetting' something (Badly worded I know)... but I liked how you quickly skimmed over on what to do in Video 3. Keeps it short and concise.

My vote: Video 3
Or a combination of both but try not to make it as long like Video 1...

And answering your question: Yes I would use your videos but only if I was extremely stuck or I would use it as revision for exams later on to refresh my memory and what to look out for in exams.

Was that a text message at 1.17 in video 1?

These videos are a really good idea. I feel that the short concise solutions are always better. I don't think its in human nature to sit around for ~10 mins for a couple of answers.

Good job!

This idea is awesome

Wish I had more of these videos throughout this year, would have helped massively
