It's not really about the word count it is about your ideas.
You should have a good conclusion, 100 words would be too less I guess.
Then 3 good ideas, hence 3 body paragraphs. And at least 2 examples for each.
Then a good conclusion.

800 words can score an 8 if everything is good, but aim for more.

100 words conclusion is less? My conclusions are like 4-5 lines (40-50words), unless you're mistaken for the intro?

Honestly, marks depend on the depth of your ideas in the essay.

But as a general guide:

Expository/persuasive : 800-1200 words
Imaginative : 600 - 1200 words
Reflective/letter/poetry : 600 - 1000 words

I find that even if i write a long 1200 word essay... it may still be worse than an 800 word essay purely because one was more dense with  actual analysis and content.

Oh sorry I meant intro. But my conclusions for context are normally more than 50

I usually write 100-150 words for both intro and conclusion. 3 body paragraphs of 200-250 words, I am aiming to write 800-1000 words for each section. I saw a good response that is 400 word-long for LA and that was a sample in VCAA's website.

That's because our language analysis is different to main-stream english and we don't need to write that much.
For context however you should write and sound like a mainstream student

When everyone else does good then the cut-off will just be higher.
As mean as it sounds, you can be happy if other people don't do good.

Seriously, for ESL expository, 600-800 words are good enough. I think 800-1200 is in Eng cohort

If everyone do well, we will be all happy together. Is it better than you are just happy by yourself?
About cutoff, you can't predict it. All you can do is to try your best. If other people don't do good, it doesn't mean you do better than them

To get an 8 in ESL with 600 is definitely doable. But don't get fool. It is not necessarily easier. Being succinct, and yet, not compromising the depth of your ideas takes  skill. I think 800-1000 words is the safer bet for expository.

What I mean is study scores are just a ranking, when we all get an unexpected enlightning during the exam and write amazing essays on a standard 45+ students in mainstream english would write. Then we would still get the same study score as when everybody did well. When you are in the top 10% and everybody does shit you get the same study score as when you are in the top 10% and everybody does amazing.
