I wasn't too disappointed with my marks, and my English teacher seems to think i'm in a good place. Two things annoyed me though:
  • My context piece was two paragraphs (felt ridiculously sick during this)
  • My language analysis article was a speech with a power-point presentation
This annoyed me for multiple reasons. What if I feel sick on the exam day? I had a shocking migraine and felt like throwing up, what if that happens again?
What if the language analysis piece is ridiculous? How can I secure a 9 or 10?

I'm freaking out.

i've come across about 3/4 of those speech ones recently. not too bad. which trial paper did you do?
seriously don't stress about it.
if it happens on the exam day let your year level coordinator know on the day [like come to school early].
you will be made to sit the exam but can apply for special consideration.
The language analysis probably won't be anything to crazy after the confusion last year's exam caused.
Don't stress. They won't throw you anything you don't have the skills to handle. Just read it carefully and apply what you know. Give it your best shot and things will be fine :)

VCAA 2010 Language Analysis was a speech on biodiversity. Two power point slides were included as images.
So don't disregard the speech on the year 12s starting the year (I think that's what you guys are talking about haha I did it too) as it could be really similar to what we get.

If the article/speech/text is ridiculous, which is actually common, it doesn't matter. You analyse the language, not the nonsensical argument.

Yeah, it was the Year 12 speech. I've done the 2010 one. Found it easy.

we probs won't get one as it was only done 2 years ago so people would all have recently practiced it in a lot of detail. they've gotta make it a bit harder :)

haha woo! if we get the same study score that'd be pretty funny :P
The language analysis was god awful, absolute rubbish.
        And practice I shall! :)

Ya-huh, worst piece to analyse. The writer didn't actually use any sophisticated language techniques. It was all based around anecdotes, sarcasm, puns and loaded language, and even then they weren't used very well. I find it a lot easier to analyse something when the writer actually has a sophisticated vocabulary and addresses ideas with appropriate methods. The speech was just awful in all senses and the photo of the party was incredibly misleading; they looked like they were in agony haha. I hope the piece in the exam is based on politics or social issues that don't involve ridiculous and boring subjects like drinking, partying and unorderly behaviour, those tend to be 'dumbed down'. I'd like something about taxation or globalisation or parliament as it would be far better to analyse.

Your marks are really good, you should be proud. It's okay you made your mistakes and I'm sure you have your reasons for your mistakes. Look don't you worry about what is going to happen on the exam day, worry about and focus all your attention into the lead up to the exam and fixing those mistakes and you can certainly improve your marks :)

I did VATE 2011 I think, it was the one with the language analysis speech about a lecturer who was talking about how people wanted exams to be abolished and how she supported exams in conjunction with other forms of assessments and they were 4 people who posted a response to this article

Oh, I've done that one in a practice at some point. Liked it better than the speech about "slowing down" in year 12 haha. Although my copy had the visual as nearly black... hope the VCAA has a good printer!

I'm surprised/confused with my result. Does VCAA mark ESL students really really leniently?
I wrote an average piece and for the context it was basically the same as my SAC.

        ESL
        Section A - 9
        Section B - 9
        Section C - 7.5

I know some ESL students have been in this country for 1-2 years, so that could be the reason?
