Hiya! I'm writing an essay for the prompt: "Nostalgia distorts our perception of current reality," and I need some good ideas for an anecdote to start off the essay. All suggestions are welcomed. Thank you!!!
I might actually extend on this as I was watching
'Midnight in Paris' last night and it reminded me of this prompt.
The protagonist in the film, Gil, doesn't look lightly upon the present. He loves the thought of Paris in the rain, and the 1920's.
Nostalgia in this film is defined as "denial of the painful present."
So what you need to touch on, is dissatisfaction of the present and
why that might be so.
You can look at reasons why someone would prefer the past to the present. Gil in the film loves the 1920's because it was an era where writers like Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein were at the height of their writing careers. So what you can look at is why someone like yourself, or a fictional character, may prefer the past to the present. You could talk about present-day wars, or materialism or globalization or the intellectual decline through technology, for example.
