if an equation is written for say y in terms of t
and i unintentionally replace t with x in my working and don't realise
do i lose marks?

yeah you do, I lost marks from my SACs due to this and my teacher said VCAA does the same  :-\

I think that potentially you could lose a half mark or something, unless you aren't told anything like t=time or x=horizontal distance from the campsite etc.

If you are given a question that simply ask you to evaluate/find/solve, without explicitly contextualising it then the following is completely valid, as (for example) t and x are simply placeholders.



Just write yourself a reminders page at the front of your bound reference with things like this on it, and have a quick read over it before you go into the exam, just stay calm and things like this shouldn't be a problem :)

I think it may be one of those things where you will lose 1 mark for it the first time, but can only lose 1 mark for it across the entire paper.

I do remember reading in an examiners report, "Students continue to replace other variables with x when solving and integrating", or something along those lines. I'll try and find it to see if they mentioned marks being lost.
