For Cosi it is very necessary and I do it in every essay. Don't know about the others though.

Destiny is right.

But I'll answer anyway. I use the message to back up my points or to prove a point. A lot of the prompts for Cosi are based on Nowra anyway.

You will need to talk about the authorial decisions and historical and social contexts to show you truly understand the text. Talk about why he/she used this and what significance it plays. Like in 'Cosi', Nowra uses the Vietnam war to illustrate the chaos and compare those in the institution with people in the outside world, etc. (I haven't given this much detail but it's just so you get the picture.)

Yep, definitely important!!! Refer back to the author wherever you can. (don't overdo it obviously)
