Revision 1.2 - announcing first Summer Session etcWhat's Currently HappeningWe've decided over the summer to hold one (or more) session(s) which is a general introduction to all of the elements of 3/4 English. It's not going to be nearly as beneficial going through particular Areas of Study until you've learned a little bit about them in class. What we believe will be highly useful is a general introduction to all of the different tasks you're expected to complete in 3/4 English - a general run down of what the tasks in each section are, and what the successful students do that separates them from the rest of the pack. You'll get a great idea of where you are heading, despite only been ankle-deep in 3/4 English, and with that sense of direction and prior knowledge of what you can start preparing and paying attention to, you'll be laying the groundwork for a successful year to come.
What is it? How does it work? Who's running it? Why would we? Whereabouts? Why should you? And what happens next?What is it?As implied by the title, charmanderp and I have decided to run periodic revision sessions throughout the summer holidays and 2013 focusing on the different sections of the 3/4 English course. We want to describe exactly what it is that Sections A, B and C entail and provide insight on the ways you can excel and guarantee yourself a better English mark.
How does it work?We're not entirely sure yet. We've pencilled in small, dynamic, classroom-sized tutes that would go for about two hours with not too many people. It'll be something along the lines of attending a tutorial and getting tutored in a small setting. As there'll be two of us, you'll undoubtedly get different insights into the ways that students succeed. The sorts of things that will be discussed will include but not be limited to;
- What the task is in each section,
- What are the major ideas that the student needs to understand and appreciate,
- Assessement criteria, and therein;
- How to write a strong essay according to these criteria,
- Essay structure and format,
- Techniques for mastering each section,
- And most undoubtedly the most important - our emphasis on the process of
developing your own ideas so that you can go and attain a high mark without copying what we've done. We'll show you how we got there from scratch, and possible avenues for you to go and produce something magical, too.
The aim is not to show you how to copy what you know works. The aim is to give you the ability to go out and prove yourself and stand your ground in the exam. Good writing comes from good ideas. The writing part comes from careful tutelage (be it from a teacher or otherwise, not necessarily us) and practice. The ideas often come from within, and sometimes need to be prompted by external guidance. We think that we can show you how the process works and how to get those marks in the exam on your own terms.
The price will be $30 per head for the 2hr session.Who's running it?charmanderp: charmanderp is graduating from VCE in 2012 from Glen Waverley Secondary College. He plans to study English, Literature and Politics as part of an Arts degree at the University of Melbourne in 2012, having studied each of these at a year 12 level as well as Chemistry, Methods and Media. He has experience helping friends and classmates with English throughout year 12 and received plenty of positive feedback. He plays guitar and piano (amongst other instruments), hockey during the winter and dabbles in creative writing.
VivaTequila: VivaTequila completed VCE a year earlier in 2011. He attained a notional ATAR of 97.10 and a study score of 48 in English - in addition to recieving full marks on the 3/4 English exam (20/20 + 20/20 + 20/20). He is studying Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne (2nd year 2013) and is double majoring in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology with plans to do Honours. He has tutored extensively throughout 2012 and holds a current Working with Children check. He has a pair of Audio Technica M-50s, night vision, demigod powers, and a job managing an internet cafe in the city.
VivaTequila's Tutoring PageWhy would we?Why wouldn't we? As far as we're concerned it's extremely beneficial for both parties. We both enjoy tutoring - it's a great way to make money on our behalf, plus we get to bestow the results of our hard work in year 12 on students who are keen on improving their marks - which means that people genunely want to be around us absorbing the advice we have to offer. Tutoring is fantastic for the tutor. There's a lot of effort involved - I mean, we have to conscientiously and intensely devote all of our mental capacity into helping our tutee's absorb the concepts and information in an accessible way. But nonetheless, it's a fantastic job.
But what's even cooler is that this is a collab. We had a stroke of inspiration to make something awesome happen - we felt like it would be pretty sweet if we worked together and bounced off each other to make an engaging and dynamic learning environment. Believe us when we say it's fun for us, too.
Whereabouts?It's unconfirmed, but it'll probably actually be at one of my university's libraries - charmanderp and I are still investigating possibilities, but there are available study rooms which could easily be used for group classes. Keep University of Melbourne in mind - but that might change in the future.
Why should you?Well who am I to say?
It's really for you to decide. Might I suggest, out of both our interests, that you as a student would be reading this only if you were interested in improving your marks. These crash-courses are a great way to facilitate any improvement. It's good for those wanting a thorough, rounded explanation of what exactly is required in these kinds of tasks; indeed it will show the puzzled student what they're expected to do. But by the same token, it will serve as a proviso for avenues to take your expression and argument sophistication to a whole new level for the keenest and most avid students. Not only that, but you've got two established tutors running it - that's double the Text Response and Context material covered - with double the resources and tutelage capacity. And because we're collaborating and we're in constant communication, there might be some networking coming out of this too.
And what happens next?Show us some interest and we'll make things happen. We're planning on having our first Summer Holidays crash course sometime in December or January. How we plan it is directly dependent on the feedback we get from you guys - this isn't a dictatorship. Let's make this run fluidly and dynamically. If you want something from us, let us know. If you're even the faintest bit keen, let us know. All feedback is good feedback, because it lets us know what we're doing right, and how we can improve.
Let this be a general discussion topic.
