Moving interstate to study questions

I thought I might try and help out people who are planning to move interstate to study or are a bit indecisive about the whole concept. It is important that you are prepared mentally prior to the offer as things can be quite rushed. There is only 1 month to get everything well and organised and then you got to leave home for the first time. In general it is not as much of a daunting situation as many would anticipate. But please shoot some questions if you are hesitating about certain aspects or problems associated with moving away from home.

There's a few of us who study interstate, even, especially at the ANU, so there's lots of help around!  Also, just as a disclaimer to everyone, it's really a lot less scary than it might seem, and pretty much everyone I know who's gone interstate has been extremely glad that they've made the choice to move.  :)

Thanks a lot for your post!

I'm considering to study at ANU next year. My course only requires ATAR 95 so I think high chance I will study there. Actually, its not my 1st time moving away from home so living anywhere by myself isn't a big deal

I just wonder renting/sharing an apartment and living at school accomodation, which one is better? I plan to apply ANU accomodation but they said I *might* be accepted depending on how many rooms left and how many students apply. I'm afraid I can't get one and if I go to Canberra, I'm homeless LOL

And I wanna visit my parents after VCE exams as well. Is it better if I fly to Canberra, find a place to live, move my stuff there then fly back to my home country or should I go back my home country, then next year go back Melbourne, take my stuff then move to Canberra (because there is no flight from my country to Canberra, I need to transit in Melbourne/Sydney)? I'm really confused to make decision now, I just wanna see my family asap instead of staying here after the exams, doing nothing. If you could give me some useful advice, I much appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!

1. I definitely recommend getting accommodation at uni - it'll be much easier to make friends, there'll be more stuff going on, and you'll also find it's just super convenient.

2. You will definitely get a place to live - I'm fairly certain they still have the undergrad accommodation guarantee, which means that you'll get a place no matter what (even if it's at like, Uni Gardens or something).

3. I think definitely go home first, then move your stuff right before you go to Canberra.  It'll just best easier that way, since you'll know where you'll be living.  :)

And I do live at ANU accommodation!

OMG you are my life-saver!

When will they tell us we can get a place at accomodation? In mid Jan after we receive uni offer?
I think I will take your advice. So next year, I will fly to Mel first then take my stuff to Canberra  :)

Btw, how's life at the accomodation like?

Definitely for all people, I recommend moving to some university accommodation place where there are a lot of new uni students moving in. It's a lot more fun to be around people who share more things in common. Even if it is a bit more expensive, at least sign a 6 months contract, I would suggest, then move out. The danger of getting a private accommodation is that you probably don't know if the location is any good and you may not want to put yourself in a position to organise all the furnishing and stuff. Either going there first to drop a few things and kind of get yourself prepared as to what the atmosphere is like, or just going there just before uni starts is fine. The only problem here is whether you have the money to pay for 2 trips. I personally did go twice, just so I was more prepared and didn't have too much things to bring in 1 go. But a lot of people only come up once and do everything in 1 go.

2 go is approx $600 right? I wanna go twice as well because I have so many stuff and one flight only allows ~30kg suitcases. But the problem is I already have to fly 12hr from my country to Mel then 1h Mel to Canberra, if I come back Mel again, I'm gonna sick of flying.

Btw, do you think its better to go by car as we can bring as much as we want? :P

and thanks for your help btw

Yeah it can be incredibly boring if you fly too much especially overseas.
If you can, then you can try driving. Obviously, it is not the most practical method but some people do that especially when they want to go with their whole family and enjoy a road trip along the way. It would be cheaper if you are bringing a lot of people with you. But yeah, ultimately it is up to you, it would be a long car ride. I also like the fact that you can go and leave anytime you like when you are driving as opposed to scheduling flights at specific times. I never tried this before though. Are you driving by yourself since your family is overseas?
