An argument is where you present your (hopefully) individual interpretation of the text as a response to the essay topic. Evidence is the content from the text that you use to demonstrate how your argument is valid.

E.g. "In Story, the protagonist Emily is a motivational character to others. Do you agree?"

So your argument will cover whether YOU think Emily is a protagonist, and how motivational YOU think she is to others. The devices from the text that you use to prove your point of view is the evidence.

So as to support your argument (contention), you need to provide examples from the text.

So if I were to argue that you were indeed indefatigable, I would cite your name as an example that supported my argument.

It's worth checking out the ATARNotes English book for solid structures regarding how to structure paragraphs in terms of contention and examples/evidence/elaboration.

Hope that helped!

Examples = metalanguage & quotes. For example, characterisation, symbol, language feature, close up shot etc.

In short; you use examples (from the book) to prove your argument (what you believe).

Easy example of how this works in practice btw:

Topic: "Harry Potter is a story about love."

Essay plan:
Overall contention - Agree, Harry Potter is mostly a story about love, and in particular the different guises of love (this is the "big" argument")
Points:
1. Harry Potter is a story about paternal love <-this is a POINT (in favour of your argument)
Examples to prove this point: Lily+James, Dumbledore
2. Harry Potter is a story about the love of friendship <-another POINT that you are arguing
Examples to prove this point: Ron+Hermione, Luna, Neville, etc.
3. Harry Potter is a story about romantic love <-final POINT of argumentation that supports your overall argument
Examples: Harry+Ginny, Ron+Hermione, Dumbledore+Grindelwald (??)

This kind of original thinking gets you a Premier's Award. Especially when you're showing such deep textual knowledge by quoting communications between Dumby/Grindy.
You could also do a little bit of a differentiating paragraph about how Harry Potter, whilst a story about love, can be about the loss of love. Eg, Fred/George, Snape/Lily, Ch-... wait... it's not on the text list..?

Just when I thought you couldn't get any better hahahaha. Dumbledore + Grindelwald is OTP. Though clearly Harry + Hermione > Ron + Hermione.

But yes, your arguments are your interpretations pertaining to the essay question. Everything you write should be done with the question in mind, and hence you are arguing along the lines of what it is asking. In order to support your view and make it really clear to the examiner you draw from the text to consolidate your points.
